About The foundation of this composite is a time exposure of the NYNY hotel complex in Las Vegas taken around midnight with the Nikon CP 990 braced against a concrete post. The image was then adjusted and filtered in PS to mimick the black egdes and simplified colors of an architectural rendering and a new sky was painted in. This image, in turn, was filtered with Paint Alchemy using a custom brush to generate the final effect. In addition, a few elements such as the actual observation deck of the Empire State Building and the art deco upper floors of the Chrysler Building were composited into the final scene. Comments welcome.

Jim, you know how much I love NYC, and as such I am baised. Yes, this is a casino in Las Vegas (well, primarily a casino in Vegas LOL), but you have captured a certain feeling here, a certain essence, that is utterly fantastic. Reminds me of how some painters used to use early photographs as the basis for their drawings/paintings... only better. ;-) My one and only quibble (you knew I had to have one, of course) is that I wish the tips of the Empire State and Chrysler were not cropped from the top of the image. But in my mind, that does not lessen the impact here at all. BRAVO!

Jim,

For some reason, this lacks something that much of your other work has - perhaps it is the clarity of thought and purpose. This feels much more impressionistic and to be honest, I like your other work better (especially - the stuff with the weird camera bird). ;)

I bet this looks great at 20 x 16 Jim, the effect is amazing, I like the detail and there is a lot going on to ponder over, I like looking at pictures and finding pictures withing pictures, like the little face dead center of very bottom, it looks like a clown... I diverse. A great image, nicely done - Richard.

I really like this treatment. If the structures weren't so modern, it would definitely be the work of an impresssionist painter. Pretty cool sh*t.

A very cheerful image somehow with great composition and texture. I like the blending of NY fantasy (i.e. Las Vegas) with the real thing. Very nicely done as usual!

Mari:

The drive from NY to Las Vegas through the mountains was enough of a roller coaster ride for me.

Hi Liz:

"I vaguely remember something," is a good way to describe most of my day.

Fortunately, with PS, yes, I usually start with a plan. Also, I usually devote a couple of days to working with specific filters or techniques. This lets me to get a good grip before moving on to something else.

Once I find a technique I like, I revisit it from time to time, perhaps incorporating it into another technique -- which is what happened with NYNY -- just so I don't forget.

Taking notes helps too. I used to do that, but it haven't felt the need lately, partly because I'm typically spending four or five hours a day with PS. Version 7 even has a built-in sticky pad which would certainly be a handy way of keeping notes as you go, then consolidating them into a journal at the end of the day.

Or you can just cut back on the wacky weed. They tell me that helps too.

Best,
Jim
