About This is a 5-hour exposure taken of the moon rising over a local corner store here in Nova Scotia. It was taken with my homemade Pinhole camera on Ilford 3.5 x 5 photo paper, then developed in my bathtub. This is for all those non-believers in pinhole photography that told me it couldn?t be done...keeping it simple without all the technical B.S. most photographers seem to get caught up in lately. Thanks to all those that commented on my last set of Pinholes.
P.S. I so glad people on this site at least know what a pinhole photo is and how it differs from a 35mm slr with film in it...thanks usefilm!!!

here is a quick scan of the image I was thinking of: Nancy Spencer's "Moonrise over Pinhole Resource". It is actually a zone plate photograph, but close enough to be interesting, I think.

With film it is certainly possible (gaining a factor 10 or more in sensitivity), but just resorting to a larger pinhole would make a big difference, say a 1 mm pinhole here instead of 0.4 mm (focal length 100 mm) would increase the exposure by a factor five.

Fun to see this after you comment on my duelling pinholes as I just developed the attached photo tonight - the moon passing behind trees in my back yard. Not much in comparison to this cool photo but certainly an overlap in ideas. My inspiration for this shot was a gorgeous pinhole of a moonrise, but one that must have been made with a very long focal length for the moon was huge (might have been film and not photopaper though) - I will look for it and let you know if I find it.

Terry,

Here is one of the links to pinhole astrophotography. There are more links at the bottom of that page...

Thanks for your comments here Taras... If you could provide a link if you come accross it... You should look into Pinhole on photo paper.. its sooo easy... Love your star trails by the way.. as far as I know... the stars are too dim to be recorded on photo paper...

Terry,

I haven't heard of pinhole photography on photo paper, but I have seen some pinhole astrophotography. Someone even captures a comet that way.

Interesting idea...

You say "This is for all those non-believers in pinhole photography that told me it couldn?t be done..." I would like to see those peoples faces right now. This is another truly unique pinhole photo here Terry. I have not seen too many of these and I have been doing pinhole for over 20 years. This would be neat to try all year round to see the different positions of the moon in the night sky. Well If I come across another pinhole star trail or moon trail shot, I will let you know, and send you a link as they just do not happen like this very often. Maybe leave the shutter open a bit longer in the early morning to capture a bit more detail in the area... capture more of that corner-store front. After saying that I still have to give you credit for having so many unique pinhole images in your portfolio. From Pinhole Dreams to your Egg shot. You truly help to promote the art of Pinhole photography and you do push it to the limits with your Fab images !

What a work? Think of a Mars shot on your pin-hole?

Jim McNitt   {K:11246} 7/22/2003
The image itself is pretty unremarkable, but the uniqueness (perhaps historically unique?) holds a certain fascination.

Are we going to see some skydiving images this summer?

Best,
Jim

Great work! Very original. I am an amateur astronomer and this is the first time I see a picture of the moon like that. Congratulation for this 5 hours photos! Well Done.

straight up terry, you tell them ;)
...........and actually you can make a telephoto pinhole camera, the further you have the aperture from the film the more telephoto effect you get.

Terry McCully   {K:9221} 7/19/2003
Thanks for your comments on this Snehendu, but if you read the info you would have found out that this was a pinhole camera without a lens... so use of a telephoto would have been impossible. Maybe read the picture info. Your welcome about the comment on your Butterfly shot.

your moonrile is an excellent great shot.. wondering if a telephoto would have given you larger moon and
reduce some negative space--just a speculaion. Overall I admire your work

Yes, my blue butterfly was real...a rare type shot in Brazil.

Very impressive - the comp is slightly off I would shift the store a tad to the right but given you can't see it through a view-finder... ;)

Of course you might push the moon streak too far over...

Very minimal picture, and great result achieved, considering the technical equipment! Regards, Lorenzo
