About ~PLEASE READ First~
Before leaving a comment understand the following:

1. This was taken with a homemade coffee tin PINHOLE camera. The shutter was open for 3 min as the light was fading fast. It was NOT mounted on a tripod but rather I held it tight against a nearby tree for support and held it as still as I could for the entire 3 min even though the tree I was using as a brace was blowing in the wind.

2. I developed it myself in my darkroom (bathroom in the tub) and I have been doing this for less than a week.

3. I do not own a scanner so I had to take a picture of the pinhole negative with my Sony F707 on macro mode then upload it to PhotoShop where I inverted it so it would look like a print.

After having said all that I hope you can find the beauty in this shot that I do and the reward of taking it with a camera that I have made myself. Thanks for taking the time to read all this and for any comments that you make.

With pinholes, it is tempting to include near objects such as the branch here and it can get a little gimmicky, but in this case I feel that the branch works really well as a lead-in to the image. I get a feeling of exploration, peering out behind the tree.

I too have used pin hole cameras -- best was made from a small rubber beach ball -- I liked it for it reminded me of the human eye -- of course you are right: it does not matter what camera but the eye and heart and soul of the photographer -- you perceive beauty and you capture it for tomorrow's tomorrows -- a wonderful sharing of your special seeing.

Man oh man. I saw that camera when you brought it into work. The day of the shoot if i'm not mistaken. You were so proud of your little creation. Let me tell you Terry, you have every right to be. I honestly never thought that thing could capture such a breath-taking image. Thank you for introducing me to the site, and giving me the kick in the ass I needed to explore something within myself. Here's to my blossoming career as a photographer. Again. Thanx man. -Jeff

Thanks for the comments Kevin... yup.. shooting for little over a year. I work tech support and am on a computer for 8 hours a day looking at photos on this site as well as others... in this time I have learned soo much about Photography. And I will say once I get into something I really get into it. But thanks so much for your comments.

When I see your photos, It makes me want to grab a camera and go hunting! You are the type of photographer that I?d like to be some day, and your photographs inspire me to work at it ? Maybe I?ll make a pinhole camera and try some Polaroid film in it ?It absolutely amazes me that you have been photographing for only about a year ? What talent you are blessed with! PLEASE keep the photos coming ? Great work!!!

Very good composition and image quality. It seems that your pinhole's hole diameter is near the optimal size.

Hi Terry,
First off, thanks for the comments you left on 3 of my postings. Now for this one that I didn't rate or comment on earlier: Given the method that this photo was taken, I don't understand the 6 rating it has. The 77 comments certainly belie that rating. I am rating it a high 7. And, as I stated on your other Pinhole Dreams post, I am amazed at these peices of photo work.
Best regards,
Jimmy
P.S. I do have an 8x10 of my Nightfall photo framed but not on my wall. It sets on top of a small bookcase in our living room.

wow! It was worth coming over and taking a look! You did a great job on composition and exposure. I really like the overall sharpness as well, you must have had a really small, well sanded pin hole to get that sharp of a picture. I assume you had a smaller sheet of paper pretty much flat to the focal plane to get such an even image. My compliments on a great capture! These pinholes are a lot of fun arent they?

First Terry, I have read all your details on just how you went about making this pinhole photograph. Second I have to tell you that you need not explain all the hard work that you went through to make this photo. Now I will have to tell you that this photograph is not only one of the best pinhole photographs that I have ever seen in my life, but one of the most unique and eye catching too. I have been teaching pinhole photography for over 20 years and this jumped right off the screen at me. The composition is very, well, unique and different. To read your words above on standing there with the camera on the tree and on your chin is a funny story to say the least. Then to take a picture of the negative is also a funny way to present your image to us here. I would invest in a high quality scanner to do this photograph the true justice that it deserves. Im not sure if you truly understand just how Extravagant of a pinhole this is. I would like to get in touch with you about print info, if you are in the habbit of selling your pinhole creations. I have read ALL of the comments left by other photographers of this site and lots tuch on my true feelings for this photograph. I must tell you again, this has to be one of the BEST pinholes and the most creative story to go with it. Congrats on this Masterpiece. This one goes to the top ov my fav list.

WOW.. thanks again Alex Teller, and Alex Le Guerrier; All of your comments on this shot mean alot to me... It truly is one of my fav pictures. I remember standing there holding the coffee can to the tree and bracing it with my chin. The light was fading fast, so I stood there like that for the entire 3 min. as still as possible. Then took the negative home and developed it in my bathtub. At the time I had no scanner so the shot here you see is a digital shot of the negative from my Sony F-707 on macro mode; ( I have since scanned it at 3200dpi and the result was FANTASTIC), I then inverted the negative in photoshop and removed the dust from hte scan. Thanks again everyone for all your comments and to all those who have made this image one of there fav's ! ! !

What can one say after a picture has been seen by 740 people and 73 have commented? Anything will be repetitious. Nevertheless, having been an amateur photographer for several decades, this is the very first pinhole picture I see and it is beautiful, it is like a salve applied to my heart, it is like seeing the promised land!
Absolutely fantastic! There are no words to express the pleasure of seeing this picture and the others too...

Alex Le Guerrier   {K:35} 2/6/2004
Improbable; this shot is a marvel. Not only a great pinhole accomplishment, but coupled with a great eye for composition; this is an exceptional union of talent and technique.

Terry, your eye is incredible, not only in the beauty and character of the barn, but the positioning of the camera. The decisions on foreground and background are unique and refreshing. The intimacy of the tree frames the shot. The branches allows for an understanding of time, contrasted by the timeless yet aged shed.

This gives a real insight on how you see the world. This is well thought out, well executed and seamlessly concluded.

It really is a pinhole dream. This is a solid photograph, a perfect 10. I envision this as just a beginning.

Terry,

Besides all the comments above (for hich I can add nothing further) the one element I will take from this photo is the ORIGINAL composition. Having limited technical ability I rely on some creative composition to give my photography a boost at this early stage in my career. This is one idea I'll be taking away with me today and replicating in the future.
Great speach on the works, indeed it is a great photo without it(as noted by Michelle K) but I like to know some background and it's good to see you've got more patience than a Sahara rain meterologist.
Rgds.
Matt

My basic premise on pinholes and other "rough" cameras is that they seem to capture undefineable qualities, and other things intangible. It's not always the good lenses or even the lack of one. Another thing I notice is that these cameras capture "time" better than anything I've come across. Breathtaking imagery for sure.

Funny thing..I was on www.digitalsucks.com and this shot was picture of the day...wierd that I found it on the day it was featured! I think it's showing for July 13th 2003 but todays date is the 23rd. Oh well it was just freaky to see it there on another site and to find it on the day it was up...Thanks again for all your comments on this one!

well terry...
I'll gladly give you my opinion.
this is absolutely stunning! I like the whole da*m thing....
the composition is SO nice, and is a great excample on how the pinhole does for a picture..every thing is equally focused... what a DOF...
to "admit" that it was as a "stand" you use the camera just makes this more impressive....

please keep experimenting - and as you don't have your Holge as of yet - then throw your digital camera out in stead....

hey terry : ) very cool result. it's so ironic actually, i hope you don't take offense to my comments i'm about to leave because that is absolutely not my intention (to offend). i came back because i haven't seen this up close #1, and #2, because you said on one of my photos you'd like to see more technical information. i thought about it but... my overall thoughts on that is that even though i have a new cam (used but new to me and so precious) that records all my technical information(s).... i don't write them down and the reason is, i like to feel a photo rather than have it be technically perfect..."that's all academics" as someone has said on their uf page and i can't remember who cause i'm a dork... but it's true. anyway.. i'm rambling on .... but it's just how i feel... your work is wonderful on it's own .. doesn't need the explanations you've given. and for anyone who might think i don't know the academic part of photography.. you're wrong.. lol.... and that's all i need to say. terry, your work is great and i look forward to more. : ) please excuse my speech. : ))

Hi Terry:

First, what makes this so unsual for me is the composition with the branch going UP into the scene. Highly original and effective. Next, I think the fact that the branch was moving in the wind, coupled with your long exposure gives this an unusual combination of sharpness and motion blur in the same image. I can't believe you held the coffee can still for three minutes and got an image this sharp. I start having problems at 1/30 sec. Finally, I wouldn't be surprised if making a sell lit copy photo with your F707 will actually produce a better digital file than a cheapo scanner. I make my copies the same way.

j w   {K:12641} 7/14/2003
Fabulous, just plain fabulous -- love the barn, and the fact that you managed to get the barn under the branch -- and the daisies in the field.

SEE HERE (she giggled) any fool could have made himself a camera out of a coffee can and held it there in the wind with his eye on his watch and devved the film and shot the film with another camera and inverted it in Photoshop and uploaded it to Usefilm.

But not any fool could have done all that AND had the eye to make this fabulous photograph.

Very very well done -- and this is a wonderful community, isn't it?

I'll be waiting for more . . . .

Wow, Terry, and I was complaining about how hard it was to focus the Lubitel. You've relly gone to all lengths for your art. I love pinhole pics and have a very large one on my wall of a path into the woods. It inspired some of my forest shots. As soon as I get the Holga, Lubitel and the Yashica Mat 124G (I just got it on ebay and it shipped today, yay!) mastered I'm definitely going to make myself a pinhole. I made one some years ago and never knew it could create such great images.

I can't believe that after all the steps you went through to get this into digital format that the detail is still intact. I'm so glad you posted this, I love it! And I love the bit about the bathtub darkroom, that is a desire of mine. Right now I can use the local art school's darkroom but I'm eyeing enlargers and plotting a place to paint the walls black.

So many projects, so little time...

Thanks everyone for your comments, they mean alot to me as does this photo...Im so glad I found UseFilm.com as I have submitted my Pinhole images to other sites and people half the time don't even understand what a pinhole camera is let alone leave a comment on the quality... I found that this site is more friendly than other sites and people take the time to comment back!!!

"It is the photographer who makes the picture, not the camera." Isn't THAT true here! I'm impressed, not only with your efforts, but the results - you have every reason to be proud of this one! Do you have any more?

Terry, even if this were taken on a "professional" camera, this would be an amazing shot. In fact, the effect you achieved here with a pinhole camera is what many standard photographers would die for. The composition here is sooo well seen, augmented by the tree in the foreground. Excellent work.

Terry! This is great! Even better with a can camera! All of that work paid off. Great perspective and composition. Wonderful tones, even have some depth! Great stuff Terry!

Cool result - and all the more impressive given the obstacles you had to overcome! Interesting composition with the branch in the foreground leading the eye nicely to the old barn... The one branch running horizontally across the roof is somewhat distracting, in my opinion, but otherwise I like it a lot! I love the dreamlike quality pinhole photos seem to always have - I'll have to try it sometime!
