About July 7, 2013

Police say a teenage bicyclist sustained life-threatening injuries after being struck in a hit-and-run in Ontario Sunday morning.

According to the Ontario Police Department, an unidentified 17-year-old male bicyclist from Pico Rivera was riding near the intersection of Riverside Drive and Walker Avenue around midnight when he was struck by a vehicle driven by an unidentified motorist. The motorist then fled the scene.

The bicyclist sustained critical injuries. His identity has not been released.

Officers are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, eighty-nine percent of bicycle deaths are persons 16 and older.

UPDATE: The teen has been identified as Horacio Pineda. He died at the hospital from his injuries.

Horacio was 17 and played played tuba for the his high school marching band. His friends say he was really looking forward to his senior year.
