In the mid 1850s, Arcata was at the established as a result of the 1849 California Gold Rush. The basement and first story of the Jacoby Building was constructed in 1857 and was the principal supply point for the Klamath-trenity Mining camp trade. From 1858 through 1964 it served periodically as a refuge in time on Indian trouble. It housed various mercantile firms during its early years. It is a California Registered Historical Land Mark.
