Such a good square portrait here, Dave! The composition really fits this kind of frame.
I find your concentration on the main subject quite adequate too. Especially the combination of color contrast and focus difference makes the animal stand out very well. Abother good thing is that the shadow and the gradients add a very good feel for its "real 3-D" shape. Especially its face seems to protrude out of the image.

Great capture, how did u come so close? Few days ago I was driving bike near river and 3-4 m in front of me one deer jump from one side of the field across the street to another.. it was so nice to see deer in nature, free..

Don't you make my brown eyes blue!! Sorry. It reminded me of the old country song. I love these animals and their big brown eyes. Is it a White Tail Deer? Saw a few of these on our trip last year. Such beautiful gentle creatures. A lovely nature shot, Dave.:)
