About The P-38 first flew in 1939 and was the only aircraft that went into production before the war that was still in production when the war ended. The P-38 was used for high altitude long range bomber escort and as a ground attack fighter. The P-38 became famous as the aircraft Major Dick Bong flew to 40 victories and also as the airplane that shot down Admiral Yamamoto. More than 10,000 were produced and only 4 remain flying today.
