About Though the shutter speed was set to 1/320, the exposure was determined by the length of the off-camera flash which was 1/20,000. (See comments for a picture of the setup.)

As usual, serious critiques are welcome.

Like a blood tainted crown. (Henry the 8th?) What an inventive creation! Your creative talent accompanies you wherever you go.
Thank you for your kind words. My photo stems from a 1000 years ago, when I still had adventure in my veins.

Fantastic series AJ .. I always admire photographers who manage this sort of shot as well as this .. all are great but this one with the tricolour stands out for me the most ~ you're inspiring me to save up for an off-camera flash!

Hi Ivona! Thanks for your kind comments. In this series I took 600 shots over two sessions, of which I kept nearly 200.

So awesome!! Love the crown, and it doesn't bother me about it being cut off at the bottom, because otherwise it' perfect!! You definately should have an award for it!

wow! thanks a lot for the great information... when I seen all these 1/10.000 or 1/50.000 I though differently that they are very special flashes... so we can do that job with a normal flash... and the card at the back helps a lot on lighting... I'm really thank about your information... hehehe... I'll try that!
Again thanks AJ!!!

Well John, what would you like to know? Just to start, here's a picture of the setup. The little metal funnel is there just as a guide for the straw, so that the drop lands in exactly the right place. The little pink pin is there temporarily for manual focussing and is removed before the shooting.

The flash was set to 1/8th power (trial and error) which I think means it fires at 1/20,000th of a second. (Interestingly, I have read that cheaper flashes tend to have smaller capacitors that are faster - and this is definitely a cheap flash!) There's a silver card at the back of the setup to get a bit of light bounced back. The camera is fired with a remote cable, but this is just for convenience really.

Setup for drops

Thanks John - that cut reflection does seem to be an issue! Unfortunately this is uncropped so the reflection is cut in the original. But I've got plenty of these so will select the next ones more carefully!

AMAZING! What I can say, I love the colors, the white and the red - blue parts... plus that the middle part of the drop is on... the air! Flying! PIECE OF ART! Cosmic shot because of the darkness... black anyway around and the excellent lighting... I could ask for a bit bigger frame just to get the reflection ALSO into the frame but that is a minor element here... excellent? well not only... that easily goes into my favorites... BRAVO AJ!

Hi Brandon! No, it's not paint - just milk with a little food colouring and ink. The dark background is a sheet of glass with black polythene (actually a dustbin liner...) beneath and behind. The drops are falling directly onto the glass - there is no body of liquid.

Many thanks, Ray. The red is food colouring, the blue is good old Parker Quink...

Fantastic capture! I love how you set this up. The little bit of color added to the [paint?] makes for such a neat effect in the frozen splash. The black backdrop really makes it pop wonderfully! Such a clean reflection. How did you get that colorful splash and still have a dark body of liquid?
Regards,
Brandon

Pure magic my friend. A wonderful induction of colour tones in this piece with it's wonderful clarity. This time it has got to be milk dropped on a patch red and blue tint of some kind and the result is thus. I particularly love the formation of the central cluster of droplets as they seperate just before impact. Great stuff AJ. All the best.....Ray

Thanks Gary. This session was quite productive and I managed to obtain plenty of usable shots - including some where the reflection of the splash is not cut off! But the real revelation has been the irrelevance of the shutter speed. Having played around at 1/1600 and even 1/6400 in the past, I have suddenly discovered that it is the flash that is all important. An off-camera unit has made this all so much easier...

This is amazingly sharp AJ and I love the central column coming up from the smaller crown. You must be real proud of this. The framing is very tasteful too. I suppose if I have one criticism it's that you've chopped off the bottom of the splash, but given the quality of the shot and the difficulty in shooting it, this is nitpicking, I know.
Regards, Gary
