About	These shrine guardians may not look much like lions because no-one in Japan had ever seen one when they were made. This one has a cub at her feet, and is looking down at the older cub. The light was wrong to show her face, alas.

Wonderful insight into Japan. I've seen Japanese paintings depicting lions and tigers sort of like these sculptures, created before the artists had actually seen these animals.
