Location City -  Warsaw
State -
Country - Poland   Poland
About Krakowskie Przedmiescie, literally “pre-town of Krakow”, or Krakow suburb, so named because it was originally built as a suburb of Warsaw on the road to Krakow. Now, however, it is in Warsaw city centre, right next to Old Town.

This is not a typical panorama in that the individual pictures were not taken from a single location. Instead, a separate shot was taken directly in front of each of the 23 buildings. This throws up some complications, in that anything that is not a flat plane directly in front of the camera is seen from a different perspective in adjacent images. They cannot therefore be merged using the usual pano software. Instead, the perspective of each image was adjusted so that the front of the building was perfectly upright. It was then cropped along its vertical edges (in general marked by the drainpipes), added to the composite and adjusted for height. Duplicate chimney stacks and other structures resulting from the different perspectives were cloned out.

It may look as though some of the buildings are joined in the middle, but the joins really do occur only between buildings. The best clues to the joins are in the paving.

And now, if you are a donor, click on the full-size pano version and explore the street. Drop into a gallery, browse in the shops, pick up a pizza, stop for a coffee. Look out for other visitors whom you may bump into several times as you make your way along. Renovation of the street is nearly finished, and if you really like the place there are a couple of buildings in the middle that you could do up yourself. Catch it now before it reopens to traffic. Welcome to Krakowskie Przedmiescie!

If you are not a donor, sorry, but you’ll have to make do with viewing the street from a distance...

As usual, serious critiques are welcome.

Ah, now I see the little red star, so you must have renewed! Good to see you back (just as UF itself seems to be livening up a little!)

Yes, the sky is a problem, but easier to solve than the paving, I feel. The regular lines of the paving mean that any tinkering is immediately obvious, whereas it's easier to disguise in the sky. This particular pano suffers from a certain amount of repetition in the sky, but I think that is more noticeable when the image is viewed as a whole, rather than in full pano mode.

Must renew my donation to take advantage of the detailed image! This kind of panorama is a real pain to take... lots of discussion of the problems and solutions on my panorama E-mail group. Well done, AJ! Lucky you to have to necessary time (and expertise) to devote to it.

The SKY is a major problem, too, don't you think?

Many thanks, Julie. How long did I work on this? Hm, not sure I want to answer that...

OK, on Sunday I took the first set of shots, but did not realise that because the pano is not taken from a single viewpoint, I needed to be much more careful that I was directly in front of each building. I spent a couple of hours that evening trying different pano programs, but it didn't really work. As I explained to Gerhard, I found I was trying to blend \ with / at the edge of each image, rather than \ with \. I then tried a manual stitch, but because I hadn't taken enough care with the shots, this didn't work very well either.

So on Tuesday I went back and took a new set of shots, this time being careful to get each individual building as straight and centred as possible. I then spent about 4 hours doing a manual stitch-and-clone. This convinced me that a result was possible, but that I needed to take a little more care. So the next evening I did it all again...

I've also produced B&W, sepia and high-contrast "line drawing" versions, but I think the colour version works best. The high-contrast line-drawing, in the style of an architect's drawing, was the original idea I had in mind, but it still requires quite some work.

Thanks Gerhard. I initially tried using Picture Gear, which I have used successfully to build panos in the past, but without success. I then tried Panorama Factory, which I have also used before, again without success. What I found was, because of the different viewpoint for each photo, the edges of adjacent photos were very different. I found I was trying to blend \ with / rather than \ with \, if you see what I mean. The effect was all the more marked because I was using an 18mm lens and was necessarily close to each building. It was a problem that had not occurred to me until I actually tried to do it.

You are too kind, Michele. As I mentioned to Gary, I originally had the idea to do this in Tarifa, but missed my chance while the main street was closed. So when I found this street closed for renovation in Warsaw, I grabbed the opportunity!

Serious critiques I cannot give you.. But serious compliments.. Very nice piece of work and a wonderful idea. I do wonder though why the pano software wouldn't be able to stitch this panorama? As long as there are matching points for the pano-software to work with it should be able to work it's magic.. Did you try to use software?
