Sigh, why did Gabriel and Hackett have to leave the band, I never understood that Gustavo. All was going so well, and then they just leave. Now, what's that? Unshameful, unacceptable! ;-)
About maths and pragmatic technology, it is strange that we can understand the world with mathematics. This is a heavy question. It seems that we see things out there, make the abstraction in our minds, and then *re-apply* the consequences of the abstraction back on real things.
For example, when we talk of "points", "lines", "numbers", all those basic things, we first have to make that abstracting step. For else we wouldn't have *lines* but rather thin stripes of various materials, colors, etc. (A line has zero width!) And with those stripes it would be impossible to go further and find for example the pythagorian theorem that we use each and every day. Removing all the ballast from the pure definition creates the idea of such a line, that doesn't really exist physically. It exists only in our mental world. And then it is strange that such a mentally constructed thing and furthermore all its consequences are so nicely applicable for example to allow Gustavo to do his job best.
Returning to Genesis, I still can get so groovy with the bass lines of "The Lamb Lies Down on Brodway", you know, doo, doorooroo, doooo - dorooo! ;-)

Recordá que yo soy un ingeniero, soy de aquellos que en la vida se han visto obligados a usar de la matemática para construir, para hacer más eficiente o más económicas las cosas, para poner racionalidad, equilibrio, estabilidad, ja...ja..., tenemos que usar la matemática de manera pragmática porque es nuestra obligación profesional...:-)
Matemáticos sos vos, y reconozco que no hay nadie mejor que vos para expresar la esencia de la matemática y en ese sentido tu aporte es muy interesante, y te reconozco la autoridad...
Me llama la atención la analogía que haces con la música y de verdad es reveladora, yo respeto a los Sex Pístols, pero mi gusto y mi corazón van a estar siempre con los complicados acordes del Genesis de Peter Gabriel (Steve Hackett y Anthony Phillips también): "Foxtrot", "Nursery Cryme", "Selling England By The Pound" incluso "The Lamb Lies Down on Brodway"... Es curioso cómo nuestros diferentes gustos musicales reflejan nuestras diferentes visiones del mundo y actitudes ante la vida... Estoy convencido de que la diversidad es una enorme fuerza creadora para los hombres, y en ese sentido aprecio mucho compartir puntos de vista con vos.

Querido Gustavo, creo que uno a lo largo de la vida le da una vuelta de tuerca a las cosas y recupera parte de su historia con otra mirada y en este trabajo creo percibir algo de eso... de las matemáticas "derivaste" a la poesia... la imagen tiene un encanto muy particular. Indeed! Quite contrary to the impression of most people, mathematics is not "for making machines", not for "getting the maximum profit", or similar. It comes from the simple verb, "manthano" in Old Greek, "matheno" in New Greek - I learn! There is nothing as humble, as sincere, (and also as curious ;-)) in any other domain of human mental activity. For to say "I learn" implicitly includes "I don't know". And more than that: "I *want* to know!" As Hilbert said:
Wir müssen wissen, wir werden wissen!
(We have to know, we will know.)
Back in the times when everything was a result of the will of some "gods", some "demons", some "etherial spirits", there were some people that dared raise their eyes to the sky and ask: What is that? Is that a place full of "gods", or "demons", or what? And they found just pi! And they found that pi even in cases in which no circle at all was participating.
Later on, they also found that the own fundamental experience *defines* what we call reality. (Cantor-Russell-Hilbert-Goedel) They dared search further. They found no god, no demon, nothing of all the mediocre fear that limits us from daring to ask ahead. And then they found purity. The purity of achieving the maximum conlusions out of the *minimum* of premises.
The image does do a "synopsis" of mathematics. It uses the usual very representing impression of what most people think that mathematics is. But it is not mathematics. It is algebra, mainly. Just a tiny part of it. A small collection of the expressions in the *language* that is used for mathematics, and in this sense it does fit the subject and also your permanent "symbolic mania", Gustavo! But you don't hit the target with this. You found the right peanut butter but as always you apply it simlpy too thick on the bread slice! And "too thick" is definitely not what mathematics does. This is what most people would connect in their minds to what mathematics does, but this is not the essence! The essence is pure, free of all that "unnecessary stuff", for it is self-containing!
The essence of mathematics is not this image. The previous one, "Ladrillos de barro" was that! This one is overkill. No mathematics. Don't get me wrong, it is a very good synthesized image, consistent and strong! But mathematics is not the complicated chords of Genesis (when they were *with* Peter.) It is more the pure rhythm of Sex Pistols (*with* Johny.)
A 7 but not for mathematics. Definitely not!

Gracias Txules, realmente aprecio que te guste!, es una idea loca que se me ocurrió y que con más tiempo podría hacer mas sofisticada, eligiendo mejor las ecuaciones y los gráficos, ya se me ocurre que podría incluir las ecuaciones de algún problema anolónomo por ejemplo, esto es un problema matemático del cual aún no se ha hallado la solución...para darle un toque más misterioso...ja...ja...
Te cuento también lo mismo que a Luis, realmente padecí, en el buen sentido, esas ecuaciones en mis tiempos universitarios, frente a mis apuntes los recuerdos llegan. Tomarlas como trozos de plastilina y combinarlas plásticamente, libres de cualquier lógica matemática, fue una experiencia interesante y gratificante para mí...Imaginate vos, médico, “retorciendo” algún gráfico de la circulación sanguínea por ejemplo, :-), qué me contás?

Con que te guste ya es más que suficiente y una alegría para mí...
La verdad es que la idea da para más, creo, dedicándole mas tiempo se podrían elegir las ecuaciones, los gráficos, para que la narración sea más sofisticada, que incluso esconda algún detalle o mensaje secreto entre líneas. En mi proceso creativo soy muy caótico, no tengo una idea clara a priori, solo un esbozo, la voy formando mientras la hago... en el final, cuando la idea toma forma y se torna clara, ya es tarde para tener en cuenta muchos detalles... Por eso estoy empezando a "recrear" algunos de mis propios trabajos, a partir de nuevas técnicas que aprendo, pero fundamentalmente de una mayor claridad en cuanto a las ideas, a lo que quiero mostrar o explicar.
Como detalle anecdótico te cuento que realmente padecí, en el buen sentido, esas ecuaciones en mis tiempos universitarios, frente a mis apuntes los recuerdos llegan. Tomarlas como trozos de plastilina y combinarlas plásticamente, libres de cualquier lógica matemática, fue una experiencia interesante y gratificante para mí… Imaginate vos “retorciendo” alguna ley o decreto, lo harías con sumo placer tratándose de algunas o muchas, estoy seguro…ja…ja…
En cuanto a Nick, un personaje!, muy valioso, conversar con el es arduo, pero siempre interesante y constructivo. Y sí, no nos equivocamos.

La imágen resulta de muy buena factura, me parecen excelentes los colores usados y la forma de ponerlos (asumiendo que es un conjunto de capas).- Ahora bien, sin dudar lo más logrado es el volúmen obtenido a través de las sombras y ese aparente relieve que tienen, los símbolos matemáticos y la textura del "papel" o soporte.- Vos sabés muy bien que soy un tipo medio "corto" y bastante dogmático (pero lejos de ser facho) en cuanto a este modelo de fotografía; pese a esta postura anticipada y maniquea la imágen digitalizada, me parece extremadamente prolija y debo admitir que me gusta, tiene algo de atractivo, por alli alguno habló de Picasso.- Obviamente está lejos de ser cubista pero tiene cercanías con algunos artistas de las "vanguardias"...(No vamos a desarrollar la cuestión, ya que el marco y el espacio lo exceden) En suma y en síntesis por alguna razón que no alcanzo a comprender debo reconocer que me gusta -insisto- y obviamente podemos seguir haciendo infinidad de cometarios técnicos...creo que es suficiente. Ahhh y a propósito este Nick es un verdadero capo di tutti le capi, es un tipazo muy racional, atento, educado y buen fotografo un "laburante" vale la pena...

Estimados amigos, la idea de hacer algo en base a elementos matemáticos me surgió de las tantas discusiones con mi amigo y científico (de nombre impronunciable..ja….ja…) Nick Karagiaouroglouk a quien dedico este trabajo. Me vinieron a la memoria mis propios apuntes de la universidad (soy ingeniero civil especializado en hidráulica), así que busqué viejas carpetas de Mecánica Técnica y Estabilidad que aún conservo. La primera sensación antes mis apuntes fue de sorpresa, los sentí extraños, ajenos, como si fuesen de otra persona, pese a la evidencia de mi propia letra manuscrita, luego, leyendo y de a poco, los recuerdos fueron llegando, y esas ecuaciones jeroglíficas comenzaron a ser nuevamente comprensibles para mí, menos mal!
Quedó algo que no se si es lindo o estético, pero si raro y original, espero de corazón que les guste. Les dejo además una de las fotos que tomé de mis propios apuntes.
