About Welcome to Machine

Welcome my son, welcome to the machine.
Where have you been? its alright we know where youve been.
Youve been in the pipeline, filling in time, provided with toys and
scouting for boys.
You bought a guitar to punish your ma,
And you didnt like school, and you know youre nobodys fool,
So welcome to the machine.

Welcome my son, welcome to the machine.
What did you dream? its alright we told you what to dream.
You dreamed of a big star, he played a mean guitar,
He always ate in the steak bar. he loved to drive in his jaguar.
So welcome to the machine.

The graphical computer interface was already there in the 80's if not even earlier, Visar. Windows nowadays has exactly what Atari, or Amiga, or Mac already had at those times. Actually Atari was much like nowadays Windows. The only difference was... it worked! ;-)

The command line interface still has its very nice elegance. Try to select and copy all files that contain the pattern, say, "PhotoXXXX-DATE-TIME.jpg" in their name, where XXXX is an arbitrary numerical value, DATE is a valid date, and TIME is a valid time. After some dozens of clicks we might get there, but on the command line it is a bless of an one-line miracle. Which shows that even one-liners can be wishable. (As commands, not as comments! ;))

But indeed the image transmits that emptyness of stage - an emptyness that is based more or less on that kind of "organized disorder" that works so well there. I have the impression that most people would wonder how that can work at all, but it really works brilliantly. And if some corn of truth is in the words "All the world is a stage" then perhaps we should allow some more disorder in everyday life too. After all, who cares if only the right files were copied? ;-)

Cheers!

Nick

i like your interpretation 1 301 307 60! you made me think about 'the dream of being a star performer'- well, you know sometime you let things dribble from subconsciousness through the lense- thanks to surrealists... and, yes, i do that many many times-

however, after i read a 'brave new world' by Huxley, there's nothing more that i really shakes my ribs, like one shakes harmonica. and, i thought, think and i think i will be thinking of this particular phenomena- humans handing things over onto computers, of which i am uterly disguisted and opposed, and i will fight against it until the last thread of my shell and spirit.
there's nothing more painful for me than drawning into comfort and into the virtual world of pleasure gaining, omitting thus much of our senses- and if that is evolution, which many of supermodernist might claim, well... oh, but i could go on forever in this!!

thanks again for your interpretation,
v.

oh you don't know how i admired other systems of computers- i only could never really learn how to use them. imagine all numbers filling up the screen, and you looking there and knowing what is going on! such a pleasure.

yes, this was a night of poetry reading of beat generation writers, and it was a great night. of course most of them were known to me, but still never heard them on a stage- even more, read by a beautiful actresse with so much sense for poetry.

regarding the note holder, well i did not care much about it- i think it does it's part showing that it is empty- like the stage, like the seat, with a projection in the background- giving some sort of spirit to the pointlessness of a stange built in vain. (of course this has nothing to do with the poetry reading night)

cheers,
v.

The dream of being a star performer... good interpretation Visar, although it took me a while to decipher what is the composition all about. I read Pink Floyds lyrics and got to relate to this work of yours.
wonderful composition..

Yes, they did, especially after the introduction of Windows! ;-)

But thanks heavens the good old amps with vacuum tubes stiull do their work excellently, and roar the hell out the speakers! I find this one quite like a moment in a studio or even better a garage, where a band plays. And it has of course to remind me of those days in the band...

Shouldn't the notes holder on the left be included completely in the image, Visar?

Cheers, and 1, 2, 3, 4...
