Thank you all. To answer Kevin : yes this was shot with the telephoto, probably at f4. The only PS work was to apply Sharpen at the selected bird's shape to amplify its contrast with the background. Don : exposure was almost a matter of luck. My Fe (now traded in, this was it's last assignment - a test before reselling) had manual exposure with speed priority. The bird was actually coming straight at me from the water - I was probably in "his" area, and it was a hard job to keep it inside the frame and focused at the same time. The exposure was kept on the initial values set on a long distance shot on the pond. My scanner is a Nikon CoolScan IV.

Great picture and nice colors. The long focal length lens was perfect for this shot. You must have a pretty good scanner for film. Well done. Don.

How majestic this mallard looks as enhanced by the great DOF on this photo. Was this the lens, or did you adjust in PS ? It looks very professional. Perfect lighting..
