Hi Dave,

A rather interesting capture indeed!

I'm presuming that this was a crop of the original which is why it is fairly grainy. I've been using Bibble Lite (recommended by some Pentax photographers) for initial pp of RAW images. However I experimented on some of my old Fuji and Olympus images and saw considerable improvements in some of them. I ran your image through and the attached image was the result.

Settings used in Bibble were:

Exposure: -0.51
Highlight Recovery: 30
Fill Light: 0.26
Sharpening: 0
Noise Ninja: 4.11
Slight S Curve applied

I'd recommend you try out the free trial version from http://www.bibblelabs.com/

I'm also going to try my Fuji in RAW mode for a while as Bibble can process the .RAF files it produces.

Neil

Thank you very much for the explanation, Dave! I start understanding now, how hard it can be when having such tremendous lighting differences. I guess that there can be no film or CCD with high enough dynamics.

I keep looking for that little bear, Gene, in amongst the furries. Seems like just his kind of party.

Thanks for the comment, Nick! I know what you mean about the lack of contrast and in fact I increased it slightly in PP. I think it's because of the vast difference in exposure between the squirrels in deep shadow, and the light coming through the leaves from a bright sky.
Dave.

Again a very nice piece of nature photography and wild life, Dave, just about on the right moment for a more hilarious image.

One thing I don't understand here, is why there is such a kind of vague haze lowering contrast over the picture. The histogram says that your darker, richer colors are dominating here, but this should avoid the above mentioned look and feel? The technical data say that it was a good exposure and the look says the opposite. What is going on here? Very strange to me.

The composition is rather weak with this kind of look. Still I guess that the squirrels didn't left you much time.

Cheers,

Nick

I am amazed they allowed you to get close enough to snap such a cute picture. Looks like they are considering hibernating soon. Very interesting shot. Del.
