About In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army
IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Taken in the military section of Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg.

I'm living here in those Flanders Fields .. i must say that remembrance and thankfullness for our liberation is still very vivid here, even after almost 90 years .. over 11 years Flanders is planning (already now) the biggest events to put this awesome period even more into people's minds (again) : the NO MORE WAR message must be repeated until eternity !!!

Dave, I love that poem, I actually still have it committed to memory from my school days when it was required learning. It is still a very special poem to me.

Poignant image, Dave! Compositionally it is great with the repeating patterns and the foreshortened perspective.

...very nice composition, the boys that went to war, came home as men and went on to make Canada THE Great Nation it is today. B&W suites this picture to show the loss we all acknowledge together on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

I thought initially that cropping the trees off from the background would strengthen the already very very strong look of the graves, Dave. But then I did that, and no! They belong there! They give depth and distance and they make the series of graves to look even longer.

The details add a grainy look that enhances the remembrance of times past. And the light, rather balanced and silent, does do at least some justice for the unlucky young guys that were sent to death again, when politicians proved to be incompentent one more time.

"Bravery"... ha! The typical excuse of politicians for convincing us to get the guns against each other, while they appear on tv, far far away from the killing fields.

I don't give it a 7 because of "bravery". I give it a 7 because of photography documenting "bravery".

All the best,

Nick
