Jan, Hi and thanks for your interest. Actually,none of these were close to each other. My wife and I are always amazed at the innumerable variations of rocks and layers along this (man-made) lake. There are many places where ones like this have obviously parted ways from another -probably a couple million yrs ago- The lake level is drawn down each fall by the Corps of Engineers, for 1. to allow white water rafting on the Gauley river, 2, make room for spring flood waters. The lake is some 13 miles long, so lots of sights to see. Cheers, Greg
Greg - really like your (so far) 4 picture series of various rock formations. Shots could have been used in my college geology class. This one makes me wonder how on earth it came to be at this particular location - is is close to or was it part of the rock formation in the first shot you uploaded? From the markings on at least part of this rock, it appears as if the water level was a lot higher at this location at one time
