Hi Doyle,
A very pretty portrait of Cydney. Her look is very appealing and cute. The lighting is wonderful, but you know that already,LOL!!! Great clarity and composition, the contrast between the rough wood and the beautiful smooth skin of the child is so lovely:)

LoL Beks! You HAVE been lookin' . . . the three you list are almost all the same level camera. In fact . . . there's a comparison chart . . .

http://www.letsgodigital.org/html/review/nikon/d40x/nikond40x_EN4.html

which makes them look like essentially the same camera . . . though it's deceptive since the specs aren't all there is to this stuff. For portraits, the D40x kit lens might work out well (though I'm not all that impressed). I like the VR 18-200 which DOES sometimes come with the D80 ! ! !

Some sample images and information on this lens . . .

Swimming in the fountain of youth will get you arrested Doyle! As far as being a fountain of info....well that's what I am here for actually. I need to pick your brain (can I, can I?)....am upgrading (yay!!!!) been doing the Canon/Nikon shuffle, as ya do when you have no pre-determined alliegance.....

Been getting the lowdown from the Canon supporters, now need some Nikon cheerers to even things up.
Not sure why I am even asking, I bet I already know the answer...but, am looking at the Nikon D40x, the Nikon D80...and the Canon 400D.
Keep it under your hat, but I am leaning heavily toward the Nikon camp (yeah, yeah, thought you might like that), and am having a slight dilemma trying to persuade myself, and hubby, that I do need the D80 over the D40x.
So, persuade me some more (or not), you know my style and standard of work (hoping to improve on that one all the time! LOL).
I would be using the new cam mostly for portrait work, but also for the other junk that I do just for me.
Not having won the lottery lately, and short of putting Doug out to stud, I do need to keep the budget slightly under control....
HELP!! Tell me what major advantages I will have by spending the extra $$
I have already been to dpreview and read all of the reviews, but the poor brain has become addled with all of the info....

Also, tell Cydney she is far, far too gorgeous (that skin! those eyes!) to be posing for peanuts for Granpa, she needs to start charging you more for her time, or get an agent and go pro!

Beautiful shot, interesting info about the flash work too.
cheers, Beks

Again you mastered the tones excellently, Doyle, and for skin this is an art of its own! The small earing with all its detailed look adds a nice accent, and above all the smile is perfectly timed here! Add the gradually decresing sharpness to the depth, that separates the girl sotfly from its background, and there we are a very very nice portrait!

Good Morning Robin!

The greatest flash I've ever used beyond any doubt has been this new SB-800. The i-TTL-BL is a balanced fill flash and the sync speed can exceed the speed the camera can do (I'm told). It came with two gel filters that mimic ambient light indoors so the fill flash matches the ambient light as opposed to having two different temperatures on the light (like flourescent and flash). If the source of the light is solely the flash . . . I switch off the BL -and the i-TTL takes over from there.

Added to that, I have bounced the flash and added a diffuser for a very soft, even light. I absolutely adore what it does for the soft even light on people shots (not that Cydney isn't photogenic on her own already) . . .

Gotta agree . . . nothing more rewarding than having grandchildren as built in models (whether they like it or not)! :)

Incidentally . . . Thanks. Oh! By the way. IF I do any kind of sharpening I would only do it as a slight unsharp mask in certain color ranges . . . never a complete unsharp mask and usually at a very low number. Before I did it, though, I'd run a slight Noise Reduction . . . about 5 at the high end. I've found that doing the NR first eliminates some of the things that might be accented with the unsharp mask . . . and it's worked very well into my workflow.

Any questions I'd be happy to explain them . . . I'm nothing if not a fountain of information . . . uhhhhh . . . let me re-phrase that . . . I'm a self-described genius who might also be a fountain swimmer WITH some information! LoL!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Morning Doyle,

A great portrait of Cydney, she's just so darn cute! The soft, smooth look of her skin is really something...how did that come about? Naturally, lighting, post work...I wonder. Having no knowledge (or experience) in anything other than natural light (hell, I don't even know what a Front Curtain TLL-BL is), I'm curious.

Excellent composition and nicely presented my friend! Built-in models, moving targets, unwitting (and, at times, unwilling) victims, however you look at it...grandkids provide endless opportunities, ain't it great?! :)

Take care...Robin

ps...SGRA!

It's a good portrait Doyle, the placement, the soft way of perspective to the wall and child, a lovely smily face and a REALLY CLEAN PHOTO...the result is great....good flash use...wow...front curtain but looks so soft....the power of the flash must be placed at 1/8 at least, is that right?
Best regards!
