About Further to my last upload, I’m making progress slowly, but also becoming more and more confused.

This is a milk drop taken with the Nikon D70s that is at last beginning to match the quality of those taken with my old Minolta A2 (see eg. http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=1017117).

I tried all sorts of ideas to try to improve the quality, including building a Marriotte siphon using a plastic water bottle and drinking straws to get a regular drop supply (for more on this see http://www.martin-waugh.com/?p=19 and have a look at some of Martin’s drop shots while you’re there - they are quite spectacular!). But in the end I went back to dripping drops out of a manually held drinking straw and firing the shutter manually (as opposed to using the remote) - two hands working together in direct contact with the equipment are far better able to get the timing right in the absence of a complex electronic mechanism. Lighting is from a 500 W halogen lamp. (My last upload “Severe Frustration” explains why I’m not using flash.)

I’ve also recently started shooting RAW. I use RawShooter to convert to JPG. Wonderful software that unfortunately was purchased by Adobe recently and “discontinued” (ie. incorporated into expensive Adobe software). Apparently it now forms the basis of Adobe Lightroom, but I don’t know if it gets into Photoshop. What is beautiful about RawShooter is that it presents a preview of all the RAW images and allows you to classify them (eg. keep this and process, keep this, possibly keep this, chuck this away) and then lets you perform some basic adjustments before converting to JPG for further processing, in my case in PSP 9. All very intuitive.

And surprise, surprise, using this workflow PSP 9 is now able to pick up the EXIF ISO information which it wasn’t able to do before when I was shooting JPGs and loading them directly into PSP 9. Furthermore, PSP 9 has done an excellent job of cleaning up the noise caused by the high ISO setting on the last two or three shots I’ve processed.

I think I’ve a way to go yet, but feel a little more positive than last night.

Thanks to everyone who has commented so far on my recent drops. I’m still looking for more ideas so please keep the suggestions coming. And as usual, serious critique is welcome!

Thanks Dave. That's full cream milk. You see, the extra viscosity helps form larger, more rounded... (OK, OK, cut the bull - you can be damn sure I just picked up whatever was handy in the fridge.)

Congratulations on the Donor of the Day award, AJ... I really do like your drop shots, you do very well at them. And this one is no exception to that rule. Is that skim or regular? :)

Best wishes,
Dave

Hi AJ
Your patience paid off with this lovely image. I think the high ISO setting decreased the potential sharpness significantly - bigger lights? I tried it once, briefly and would like to experiment more when I have some time - a type of shot every photographer should try! Regards.

I think your drop shots are great, AJ. I've been trying, but it seems the harder I try the worse I get. I'll be sure to check out Martin's shots. Maybe I can learn where I've been going wrong.:)

Hi Tycho! What else would you like to know? The settings are specified and there's quite some explanation in the "about".

Just to summarise, though:

- lighting from 500W halogen lamp
- blue bowl containing about 1cm of milk
- a 10cm drinking straw to pick up milk (finger over end) and drip out drops (release finger!)
- press shutter manually as finger is released
- repeat many times!

The bluish tint was enhanced in PSP9 (superb image editing software which, incidentally, is currently provided free with Lexar memory cards!)

Hope this helps, but if you have any specific questions, I'll be happy to tell you more...

Hi Doyle! I have been shooting RAW for a couple of months now, but have not yet totally got to grips with setting up an effective workflow.

I'll have a look at Capture NX, although I hate Nikon's Picture Project.

I very much like RawShooter but don't really want to work with dead software (and the way Adobe killed it off discourages me from using anything Adobe).

Bibble seems to be moving on from where RawShooter left off but is somewhat less elegant. But that's what I'm evaluating at the moment.

Incidentally, after my frustration with my image "Severe Frustration", I found that PSP 9 was able to do a superb job on the noise. (I see I'm being inconsistent here - I still use PSP 9 which is dead software, ever since JASC was killed off by COREL.)

So as you see, I'm up to my neck. Life was much simpler shooting JPGs...

Like milk! And that is a nice effect as usualy that drop after falls connected with the serfice, very good job!!!

AJ, congratulations.... very well done! I so enjoy reading your "about", it is all so helpful. I had no idea so much thought and effort went into a shot like this, I just thought some people are just "good" lol. It's good to know I'm not the only one getting frustrated and often give up... you've shown that perseverance eventually has it's rewards. Thank you for sharing what all went into this. 7+++
