april is a happy little girl and full of fun ..she dose get hurt by ignorant peoples words ..but bounces back ..she is very clever and good drawing.
The school has sent a teacher to learn sign so she can have one to one teaching ..they also have a dinner lady for her.
She has made some friends in school and can,t wait to go every day..i like the idea of a buddy system and will get my daughter to put this forward to the school..thankyou for your lovely words and wishes it is greatly appreciated...lot,s of hugs nessa

Hi Nessa, it is terrible to hear that April, who has much to overcome already is being shunned and taunted by her peers and older children. A twelve year old!! Amazing, I am gob smacked to read that some parents are still bringing their children up with so little tolerance and understanding to those among the community that have disabilities. It is very frustrating as a parent to know this.
I realize that you posted this a few months ago, but here is a link on assistance dogs, particularly hearing dogs, that may be of some use to you.
Hugs for April, and my best wishes that she holds her head high to the few people that will miss out on what she has to offer the world in her silence.

Dear 'nessa... This is beautiful... April will suprise you all, of this I'm sure... With the signing, and time, comes a confidence that will grow... and a companion friend to hug, play and confide in, definately... Labs and retrievers are great as are quite a few other *helper* dogs... What about maybe a Labradoodle...???
A girl friend of years ago was profoundly deaf... She signed and lip read, but when ever she could she prefered to *talk* along with the charades... She grew into a beautiful, funny, intelligent and happy adult, worked, married and had children... She felt music through the floor and a wonderful dancer... We, her hearing friends, never thought of her as any different to us...
May the hurting taunts of others be recognised for what they are... Has Aprils school explained to the other students and parents what her situation is... Maybe setting up a buddy system to help April, but at the same time, helping the children caring, understanding and tolerance...
Keeping you all in our thoughts & hearts always 'nessa...

First i have to say that you have made a portrait of hers that tells much about her world.

Hi Nessa....what a lovely little girl do you have!!You caught her so wonderful. I'm so sorry that she is partialy deaf.I thnik to buy her a dog could be a wonderful idea.I have a Labrador and I can say only that he is so adorable.Labradors love children,they are patient,sensitive and they are the best buddies.They love to play and I would say with such a good dog she will be very happy!!!

Thankyou keith the dogs sound lovely ..we had a old english sheepdog who come for us if the children were crying when they were babies and would sleep by there cot in the daytime ..but her grooming was very hard work ..she was a lovely old dog who died afed 12yrs..if it was,nt for so much grooming i would get another one..nessa

A dog that I like for being low key. Always seeking companionship. Loves to be around family members. If raised correctly way would be the Rottweiller. Of course you may need a little extra room.

Thankyou so much for your lovely words michele you are lovely friend to have ..poor little thing was actually picked on by a 12yr old girl the other day ..12 can you beleive it ..calling her fat and stupid ..took a lot of control for my daughter to walk away but has upset april and mum greatly.. myself too..the thing is people don,t understand april can hear them although partially deaf but can,t talk..the doctors are trying to find out why she can,t communicate..my daughter went to a medium yesterday and she picked up on april..told my daughter she can talk..and to take her to her ..thinks she can help..got nothing to lose ..so she might do it .lot,s of love nessa

This is a beautiful little girl! She is your daughter? You're blessed my friend! Working at a daycare I have met many many kids that sound like your girl... some who never spoke hardly a word until they were 4, but now they're doin awesome and with therapy and lots of prayer, you would never guess some of them had problems speaking... and as for the dog, I used to have a Labrador retriever when I was little, and he was around when my mom had a daycare in our house... I remember the kids always being their rough selves with him ALL the time and I never saw him bite or growl back... he was so playful and perfect with kids as I hear almost all in that breed are! Either way I'm sure you'll figure it out soon enough! April and your family are all in my prayers! :) And again, EXCELLENT work here with this portrait!! Angle, lighting, coloring, and everything is perfect!

I have read that bull terriers are excellent with children with this type of problem
My mother in law is just out of hospital and out Wiemeriner has been at her side constantly and comes to get us if mom needs us, Also our lab has been very watchful around her

I'm sure a labrador would be the perfect companion for her, are the aware Nessa that apart from them being dogs for the blind they are also trained to be hearing dogs too! It would be worth while enquiring about it as a hearing dog could be of great benifit to her as she gets a little older.

I have a Tchi Tzu and she is crazy about kids. Mostly when one of my kids are sick or sad she is hanging arround them. Like she is trying to protect them or to get them to a better mood. My dearest friend, I wish you and yours all the best and hopefully April will do well. God bless her.

Nessa - April's hair is like spun gold; she is so beautiful even in her retreat. No consolation but I have several friends my age (in their 60's) with profound hearing loss that have been quite successful in life and had severe problems as children. Today, no doubt, there is much more knowledge to help cope with these and other challenges. Signing is very important and lip reading can eventually be learned if desired.
As to a pooch, I believe Labs and Border Collies may be a good bet and Labs are often selected as service dogs in the health industry because of their abilities to sense feelings and needs of humans. Breeders can provide help and advice on this subject.
Wishing you the best and to your family, especially pulling for April.

Excellent image of April... she must be lonely... I am sorry to hear there is not a quick fix for this...but maybe an adjustment for everyone . It sounds like you are getting lots of information and help with this problem and my vote is also with a labrador...MY favorite dog.....sooooooo sensitive, they can tell if a person is going to have a siezure and warn you before hand..> as other dogs can too<<
April is beautiful and I hope she is not lonely very long...I know she is not totally lonely with such a wonderful family but lonely for kids her age I am sure:((

Thankyou cathy for your words ..it was heartwarming to read about you dogs too..i love how human and animal can come together in these times ..april is very lucky to be able to stay in mainstream school..thanks to her teachers who have sent her own personal techer to learn sign and a dinner lady might be hired to learn too so she can be on the playground with her..the trouble with me and her mum is we hear what the doctors are saying but still determined to prove them wrong..whatever i know she will grow up to be a lovely little lady with a heart of gold .hugs nessa

Vanessa, I think this portrait should be printed big, put in a frame and then on a wall in your house! It is perfection! Not only is the little girl a precious jewel, but the colour of her skin, the light in her hair and the whole attitude are RARE things to encounter!So much the more it makes me sorry to know (from your about)that she has a disability! My first thought when I saw this image was that she had disconnected from the world, then I read the story and it broke my heart.
I work with young children every day. I quite often see them disconnect like this, wandering in a private world somewhere. Noise brings them back.
I understand the struggle of families coming to terms with the loss of dreams for their child when they have a disability. Our eldest has severe disabilities, and was nearly six before he spoke. He is now 27 (next week) and has a daughter himself who has unfortunately inherited his disabilities. We share the raising of her too. These children have so much to teach us, about ourselves and about love.
Labradors are amazing dogs, very intuitive. One of our older dogs was blind when we got our new lab. She sensed there was a problem and led our old dog around by the ear, to food and water, til he died of old age. You are in my thoughts. CC

Stunning shot present a lovely child, and as you write to the title and not only, she looks sad, that lonely feeling surely being given to the watchers and that is a very good element dear Vanessa, the color vesrion surely makes the image looks noooooot so sad surely!
I love the angle and the way you frame her ni diagonal way her face - head, and generaly her pose, natural without fake tries to look like you want, excellent that too.

Hi Nessa,
This is a lovely photo, and April is a beautiful child.
I don't know too much about dogs, but it is my understanding that Labrador Retrievers are known to be very extremely friendly and loyal. Border Collies are extremely intelligent, and fiercely loyal, but I think their long coats may be a bit high-maintenance. If these breeds are too large, Pugs tend to be very funny and have wonderful soft coats (they do also tend to be a bit mischievous). Pugs are currently the "it" breed of dog here in the states, so I know several people who own them.
