Ive found a link that might be useful of a video tutorial of gradient maps: http://layersmagazine.com/using-gradient-maps.html
I dont do it exactly that way, the one i used on that photo i created myself using a subtle yellow and red tone. you can get some nice effects.

How does that work? I'd like to give it a try.

Thanks sally for the advice, your probably right about the tighter crop. As for the duotone i used a gradient map instead of using the actual duotone option.

I think this has a really bold and moody look to it - I don't usually like noise / grain, but in this case, I think it enhances the picture. I reckon you could probably get away with a slightly tighter crop either side of the boat (so the the seaweed in the foreground on the left is nice and evenly in the corner), and then perhaps dodge the wave and burn in the seaweed - to add a little more contrast. Is it duotoned? It looks great!

Thanks for the comments guys, I chose to have the boat central in the pic because of its symetrical shape so thought might add bit more impact.

Hm, like the rugged look alltough it would have been interesting to see it with a little less grains. Like the feel of this photo with a black sea and heaven..
