Elias -- PhotoImpact 12 is totally self contained and does much of what Photo Shop does.
It is a very good product and is packed with filters, special effects and retouching tools.
Good luck!

Thank you Jan...I will get Photoimpact 12 to start to work with this filter...your new image with the smoke is interesting....my best

Jan Hoffman Jan Hoffman   {K:39467} 11/25/2007
Elias -- Thanks so much for commenting. The particle filter is a filter based on sophisticated mathematics that can take a particle type and alter its characteristics based on the photo it is in as well as placement controls, size, transparency and many other factors (including reflections).
I use a ULEAD filter that was designed for a different product (PhotoImpact 12) but seems to work fine in Photoshop CS2 and CS3. Many interesting effects can be achieved. I just posted a picture yesterday of cigarette tubes taken on a scanner where I introduced smoke-like particles (using the same filter) as part of the background.

you have to tell us more about to work with particle filter.....SUPERB pic.....congrats..

Jan Hoffman Jan Hoffman   {K:39467} 6/11/2007
No, Photoimpact, from ULEAD Corporation, is a totally separate package and is a stand-alone photo editor with many features similar to Photoshop. Many external third-party products designed to work with Photoshop also work with Photoimpact. I do most of my work in Adobe Photoshop but every once in while I use Photoimapct to achieve certain effects. Usually you would not have both packages but I have used Photoimpact for several years and keep it up to date to use some features that I like.

Thanks for sharing, Jan !!

Avi -- Thanks so much! The bubbles are the result of using a particle filter which creates user defined particles that can contain properties of size, shape, translucence, reflectivity, and so forth. There are several "out there" but the one I used was a filter built in to Photoimpact 12.
--Best to you, Jan

Jan Hoffman Jan Hoffman   {K:39467} 5/24/2007
Gurmeet -- Thank you so much for your comments. Yes... this picture represents two digital alteration phases. A macro mode photo was taken digitally of the lamp shade and lamp from above, looking down. The photo was then adjusted slightly for contrast, color balance and cropped. After this first phase of clean-up a particle filter was applied to the digital image. The particle filter has controls to establish what the shape and optical properties as well as location are of the one or more particles that are created. Using this filter and it's controls, I created the spheres, there locations and the optical characteristics of the spheres.
The result of these two steps is the picture posted here.

Mark -- Thanks so much for this comment. I truly appreciate your kind words. Just to set the record straight and honoring full disclosure, I actually used two post processors to get this effect. Most of the treatment was done in Photoshop CS2 but the optical-quality spheres were produced in ULEAD Photoimpact 12. Photoimapct can read and write .PSD files and it is very easy to go back and forth between the two. The particle filter in Photoimpact offers considerable control over the the results.
Again, welcome to USEFILM (I left a welcome comment on one of your pictures a few minutes ago) and I look forward to seeing more of your pictures.

Thanks, Ann. There are a number of post processing filters packaged with PhotoImpact 12 from ULEAD corporation. One of them, the particle filter, has controls to adjust a number of parameters to give fine control to the outcome. Filters similar to this probably can be ordered for Photoshop as well. I use both Photoshop CS2 and PhotoImpact and PSD and jpg files can be handed off between them with little to no compatibility issues.

Thanks, Doyle. I appreciate the tip off to Davide's posted photo and his droplet recipe. It sounds quite straightforward and most likely could be combined with the RAINX technique to make the droplets smaller and better defined. The result was really impressive.

Doyle D. Chastain Doyle D. Chastain   {K:101119} 4/12/2007
Wow Jan . . . old trick for some of us older photogs . . . guess you're younger than you thought. Bought RainX for the same reason about 6 months ago . . . and not because of all the So Cal. rain either!! LoL!

Still, lighting, focus, etc. are the real tricks. I got a lot of useful information off a great photog who used - get this - a SLINKY a little over a year ago . . . to get something very different. He left a peek with us here at UF . . . http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=1053045 . . . if you're interested.

Anyway . . . it's still QUITE impressive when done well as John aptly demonstrated . . .

You both have some amazing work here, rightfully (and thankfully) recognized by the staff!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

A very nice effect Jan, congratulations on BIP.

I used to use an earlier version of ULEAD and it was very good even back then.

I must say, the filter provides for much sharper and more enticing drops than using water - I know, cos I've been playing around with the concept over the last few days. Watch this space!

Thanks, Joe. The particle filter that I used is one included with ULEAD Photoimpact 12. It allows quite a bit of control of how the filter behaves, so numerous effects can come from just this one filter. I often use PS CS2 but did not have a plug-in handy to achieve what I wanted so the ULEAD product seemed to be a convenient choice.

This is really different, attractive and interesting. It keeps you looking. Particle filter, I got to check that one out. The colours and composition are very good. 7+++++ on this one Jan.
All the best my friend.
Joe
