About Helping Marny with exposure settings while she tried out her new 2x teleconverter, I saw one of her MANY wind chimes. This one has a cracked glass sphere with a blue LED light surrounded by brass rods. No flash with a slow shutter and the light blue stucco house siding behind. Light on the brass columns reflected from houses and other lights behind me. Because I was afraid the 30 sec shutter would cause the light to glow enough to mask the micro-cracks in the thick glass sphere, I dropped the ev setting 0.7. This isn't up to my snuff, but I'm still learning . . . and loving learning!

For Dear Annemette . . . who makes people see the uncommon in the common.

(ISO 100; 240mm; shutter priority; center-weighted metering; 30 sec shutter; f/12; -0.7 ev; mode IIIa s(RGB) color; Manual focus)

Hey you :) Great to see the double-feature Chastains on the front page. Congrats on the exposure Doyle (you rock!) and congrats Devon for a wonderfully candid critique - serves as great encouragement for everyone.

Cheers,
Rina.

Oh AJ! Don't you know there's no such thing as an 'unwanted' Nikon? ( sniff ) It's just soooo sad anyone would suggest it! The lad has a point & click!

I couldn't agree with you more, Devon. In future when I look at Doyle's shots, I'm just going to say, "what does Devon think?"!

Looking forward to seeing some of your shots - I hope your parents are not going to try to palm off some of their unwanted "old" Nikons on you!

Devon:

Another great critique and a perfect example of the fact that not everyone agrees . . . a lot is subjective. In my defense, I could have lessened the warmer (reds and oranges) lights but increasing the shutter speed. Usually though, the warm colors mixed with the cool colors (blue, purple and black) usually contrast nicely together. The balance makes for a better overall shot. Not always though. In this case . . . I thought it would help. In NO case will everyone always agree . . . and sometimes there's NO right or wrong . . . just what YOU like.

Regards,
Dad <~~~~~

PS: Where's YOU'RE picture??

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique Well, son or not I must give my honest opinion. Personally, I'm really interested in the light, (Well, duh it's the image title) Haha, but the way it looks like a cracked orb shimmering white light everywhere is great, although I'm not too sure about the chimes around it. I'm totally new with photos and all that, so my opinion really means close to nothing, but to me, the chimes aren't too fascinating because the red light on each of the chimes are in no connection, to the light... really saying it just doesn't match. I'm not sure if it was supposed to or not but just giving my opinion, but again, I'm new at this stuff have to start from somewhere right? Overall it's a good picture because light is what I'm focused on, and like the image title states, "Marny's Magic Light" the photo I would assume is related to the light and not the chimes. Haha.

Hi Jan!
Marny's Blue Light Special would have been a great title. LOVE it!

Yes, the glass is VERY thick and the sound emanates from it striking the brass cylinders. It was a new one on me too! Quite safe. I could have decreased the exposure time but was trying to see the effect of the slow shutter on the light. Probably could have done it without boosting the ISO anyway. Just an experiment. :)

Doyle I <~~~~~

Thank you so much, Doyle!!:-) How happy and honoured I am to get such a sweet dedication from the king himself...not Elvis but the King of Cool:-)I´m very happy if I can inspire in the slightest way although I don´t have your fine skills and experience. Tak!
A very special image with the appealing blue globe that is stuck in something that looks like metal? The wall behind is also very rusticlooking as was this from your own private castle somewhere:-) Yes, everyone can see that you love to learn and love life- and your wife(what a rhyme!) although I´m trying to convince her to dress you in spandex when going out in space*LOL*
Thanks again- I´m very happy about your dedication:-)
Happy Easter
Annemette

So this is the Marny blue light special, eh? Great idea to catch the light and the glass texture this way.
Doyle -- OK -- here is the question: are the sounds of this wind chime generated by the glass hitting the brass rods? Seems like a disaster in the making. I have a number of wind chimes but I have never seen this design before.
Also curious: why not boost the ISO to 800 or so and decrease exposure time?
--Best to you, Jan

Hi Doyle , What a beautiful magic light Marny has !! Woohoo !!
Wait it's actually a wind chime that is so lovely ! Very good shooting here as I think you accomplished your goal and the cracked glass is visable-- I bet it sounds really amazing . This is a unique image regadless- also like the red in the chimes that look like red lights... It's very interesting Doyle.

Best wishes,
Michele~
