About ...about a mile from my home. Recently I read someplace that these granite boulders are not deposited here, but rather they are shaped by erosion in place. I always thought their rounded shape was attributed to movement...as from glacier or whatever...but that is not the case.

Fresh snow is so pretty if you get out before all the wild critters track it up.

Thanks for your insight, Peter! The sunshine on the background hill was only there for a few minutes...and then it began snowing again, so although the light wasn't exactly what I wanted, it turned out ok. Seems like that is often the case! :)

Beautiful photo of this quite strange landscape .. the balance in the composition is the first thing that i see .. secondly the colours in the photo look super, and are quite going together .. finally contrast: excellent.
So a big thumb for a difficult landscape shot !!

Thanks Tim, I hiked over to this rock from our home a few times...then realized a road (that I've been on many times) goes within 40 yards of it, lol. Manitou is neat place...right next to the mountains and right next to Springs. I'm between the Sangre de Cristo mountains and the Arkansas River canyon. Let me know if you ever come visiting the area, we can go shoot some stuff. :)

wha wha weee wha .... just love that composition. The color of the rock makes it jump out of the snow due to the contrasting warmth to the snows cool tones. The off centered positioning is perfect as well. The is the stuff i love about Colo. Hey I don't know if i told you or not, but i was born in Manitou springs right near the pikes peak railway. Got relies in Colo. springs.

Hi Kes,
Funny how this one has a very similar appeal to "5 Trees" yet less than one third the visits and less comments. I guess simplicity (good simplicity) wins out over detail. I really have no idea why. This is also a very cheerful, upbeat winter image.
I like what you say about the new fallen snow. I don't som much mind the wild critter tracks, but there is always something a bit special about being the first or only human tracks to visit a trail. Very special actually!

Hi Kes, very nice shot. Only positive feedback on this one. Nice composition, nice colours including a beautiful sky to contrast with the snow. Impressive dof. Well done.
All the best.

Hi Khayala, it's faily easy to work with the landscape here, the problem is often choosing what not to show. The land is just too big to fit in one photograph!

This weekend has been the first time in weeks I've had a decent chance to take some photographs (this one was taken December 19) and do some extra "UF'ing"...so it's catch up time for me also. :)

Hi, Kes. Lovely composition. I like the blue aspect of the sky and colors...well done as usual!!!

P.S I was away from UF, couldn't make comment before...
