Saw AJ's comment and he's right too . . . a darker BG would have also helped by isolating him. Example attached and, frankly . . . his is a better idea than mine was! Oh well . . . LoL!

Darker BG Example (& tighter crop)

Doyle D. Chastain Doyle D. Chastain   {K:101119} 1/20/2007
A tad too close my friend . . . crowding the crop (IMO) . . . also . . . low level backlighting would have helped immeasurably. Awesome focal clarity though. :) I'll not mention the sharpening . . . something possibly not needed at all with your wonderful new tool! ;)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

AJ.... When You are Up-loading an image to post with UF and you fill out your paper-work... at the bottom where it says 'Image sharpening" I thought that was where we were supposed to put how much we had sharpened our image ....(?) John Hatz tried to tell me that UF over-sharpened and not to ever use it... but I wasn't so sure of it working that way. I'd never in well over one year, allmost 2 yrs. heard of it. From reading your message I am begining to think that it's very true....
I know that would make a huge difference ..over-sharpening really damages images IMO .... so I would tend to blame that as a major part of the problem and perhaps not using 'fine ' quality of which I have changed the setting for that as well...

I was all set to comment on images today and take my time, post something to be very proud of and our power went off again at 10 am...... Dang.... It's too cold to have no power so over to the casino my Mom & I went.

Thank You for your input and helpfulness with me and my new camera... I know it will take some time to work it all out , and I appreciate your time.

Take Care,
Michele~

Oh no, Willie´s white chest is important I think! But yes, the collar would be good to remove:-)

Hi Michele: from what you've said, I guess the "pixelly" look comes from using normal quality x medium size x Picassa sharpening x perhaps UF sharpening (if you didn't set it to "none" when you uploaded the image).

I would suggest only ever using the fine quality and large size unless you expect to be short of space on your card (although a certain well-known internet photographer reckons normal quality is sufficient...)

I don't know Picassa so I'm not sure how much control you have over the settings. I use Paint Shop Pro 9 which allows me to control very precisely the size of images so that they fit just inside the UF pixel and filesize limits at the highest quality.

Hi Annemette, I was trying to make the BG all dark and just have Willie's eye's and whiskers showing... the question is should I cover his white on his chest , I would definitely remove his collar but not so sure about his white chest...
Thank You so much dear Annemette.. We still have stormy days here and snow as well,
Take care my friend!

Hi AJ ... what you have suggested is exactly what I was hopping to achieve... His eyes and whiskers popping out and his hair and head so to speak blending in with teh BG.
Well I was just using medium quality because I was practicing and then I ended up liking this shot. I didn't do a thing to it, just shapened a tiny bit one time on Picassa program. that was it. I dono't know why you see it pixelly unless like you say I will need to use the highest quality and maybe change programs for post processing ?
Thanks so much for your comments AJ ... I appreciate them very much my friend!!

--Best wishes,
michele~

Love the whiskers that Willie sports. You came very close to your target with your idea as the whiskers and eyes are very prominent.

Hi Jan -- thanks for the comment and critique. I really appreciate your Time , and talent. This time I was trying to go for Willie's face to be blended into the BG .. With mostly his eyes and whiskers to be seen... His expression may not have been strong enough for that kind of portrait, and perhaps I should have written what I was aiming to show.... From your POV I do see what YOu mean tho.

Thanks so much Jan,
---Best to You , Michele~

So cute with all this fur almost like Little Henry, but as a cat:-)
If you made the background entirely dark I think this catportrait would look even nicer.
Take care
Annemette on a stormy day!

heheh.. when I looked at the thuimbnail, I thought he was sitting on top of somebody's head. Now I see it is his white chest...

You go with that new camera... I know it is always exciting to get a new one and learn it...

What, you mean he doesn't ski?

Following Jan's comment, maybe you'd consider decreasing the brightness of the background - I think he'd look really cool with just his eyes, white whiskers and highlights popping out of the darkness!

One other thing: it does look a little pixelly on my screen. I assume you've got the camera set to take the highest quality JPGs it can handle. If so, maybe the quality is being lost in whatever software you are using prior to uploading?

Michele -- Good Willie capture; none of my house cats have ever liked the snow but the strays that I take care of tolerate small amounts. Good delineation of those great whiskers. This one could have used a wee bit more exposure as it is slightly dark. Looks like an underexposed flash picture.
--Best to you, Jan
