Yes, Nilanjan, it was exactly that bright sun that still lightened many parts of the image despite the manually adjusted underexposure.

Thank you very very much for the nice detailed comment, Patrick. It was that kind of atmosphere you already talked about, that I had in mind while shooting.
I also find those flags not really belonging to the scene. But still I am happy with the photo since it could be worse! You see, usually the Swiss seem to think that one might forget in which country he/she is. To avoid this and make tourists feel sure about geographic location, they fill all places with national flags, as you can see in so many of photos of Lucerne. Even the snack-bar at the corner will tell you where you are! ;-)
What the heck? Everybody knows that even GPS may fail sometimes! ;-)

Sometimes a shot that isn't technically 'perfect' benefits in other ways... there is such incredible atmosphere in this photograph. It almost reminds me (if you ignore the flags!) of a still from a gritty 1970s cop film like 'Bullitt' or 'Dirty Harry'. It's got a raw energy that I really like...
