Oh no, no, don't remove it, Cathy. It's not "bad", it only has its problems, just as most of my photos also do, that make it hard for the "neutral" spectator to receive the message that was intended.
It is the general question about the reasons/intentions that make us post some particular photo. They are of course very obvious for the maker of the photo, but any person out there has only one mean to approach the understanding of those reasons and intentions, and thus to understand the message. It is the photo itself.
This doesn't mean of course that any photo should be removed, since some of the spectators may also receive some other message, which may have never been sent, but nonetheless can be a source for further interpretations, that cover a very different domain of "looking at things".
In addition, any collection of photos (or any other works) that is exposed to public, is never complete by containing only the "top items". It has to contain those which are not the best, simply because one of the purposes of such an "exhibition place" is to support further work by exposing results of work done so far, and giving us some hints not only about what is excellent, but also about what is good, just ok, or even not good at all. You see, confirming the quality of some excellent work is indeed good for knowing what to do. But talking about things that are not good, is also good, since it doesn't only show us what to avoid, but also something that I consider even more important: How to improve the way that something was captured (technique, light, etc) in order to make a better photo of a kind that was not existing up to now. This way new techniques might be introduced that enrich our "mental toolbox". In this sense even negative critiques are indeed positive - which seems to be not very widely recognized in this forum ;-)
Have a nice weekend and keep it up!
Nick

Yes Nick, you are very accurate in your assessment of this image. I appreciate the input. Once I receive confirmation that my friend has seen his cake I shall remove it from the site. CC

Hmm, rather boring one regarding composition and subject, Cathy! And a pity that many of the lights are also enough out of focus for not allowing their nice metallic colors reveal their sharp contours in front of the background.
As a side note, since such events, like the one you describe, can only be of a very personal nature that just can't touch anybody else than the persons that participate, any attempt to capture something particular in relation to the evnt, has either to be perfect, or to be avoided completelly. You see, what I see here cannot be your joy and enthusiasm, but simply a cake.
Best wishes,
Nick

Well Dave, I have spent days trying to come up with a smart comment about the lack of fifty candles. To tell you the truth it had not occurred to me that there was such a lack in this luminescent tribute. Eleven candles, why eleven? If there had been 10 I could have said there were 4 other cakes! So your criticism stands unopposed. I can only say I have learned my lesson and will not let this shabby oversight occur again! CC

Your comment seems to indicate that I have unintentionally happened upon your birthday. Is it today? Many Happy Returns for whenever it is, and best wishes for the Holiday Season. Thank you for your kind words. I am patiently waiting for more of your portraits, which I really enjoy. CC

Excellent job with the lighting, Cathy! You;ve exposed the colors of the candles and cakes perfectly without overexposing the flames. Good job!
Only criticism... there ain't 50 candles. Unless it's due to that pesky metric conversion thingy.
Best wishes, Dave
