Congrats on the award. I really like it. I agree with Tony's last comment and concur with Doyle very nice. I played with the picture on the screen here with a piece of paper cutting off some of the foreground which is interesting but I think it actually detracts from the water running out of the picture, and leading you in and the water coming in on the left, and the overall effect is changed. There is so much in small colors that playing with this would also change out some of the small stuff, flowers, people and roof tiles. IMHO Kerry

Good to see some proper critiques - and some opposing points of view! Various interesting points raised, reminding me that sometimes it would be really nice to know why a particular image has been awarded. It's not that I'm questioning the award, but rather that I would like to see the awarder's critique. This is, after all, a learning site, and I think such a critique would be very helpful.

As to my own opinion, well, I think it's a very nice picture, but I would stop there. Pat suggests that it needs a strong foreground element, and this is perhaps the problem for me: it already has one with all that water. But this draws my attention away from what was presumably intended to be the main focus of attention - those wonderful buildings.

There, that's me sitting firmly on the fence in this discussion! Nice one, Paulo, for generating this debate with your lovely image!

I have to speak honestly, it’s technically good, sharp and well exposed but from a compositional point of view I find it lacking a single strong element. It doesn’t tell a story or capture my imagination. It needs a strong foreground element or perhaps a more interesting perspective. No disrespect Paulo but I find it to be sort of average. IMHO

Hi Doyle,

and ofcourse Paulo too. Congrats with your critique award and Paulo with the Staff's Choise award.
I think this picture is all Doyle wrote about. The composition is outstanding, so didn't understand Tony's words about that and subscribe Doyle's.
Take care,

Klaas

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique Hey Paulo!
I'm intrigued that Tony's critique made some of the points it did . . . everybody has their own opinion though! While I may not necessarily agree with him I always feel good when I see people making critiques . . . it gives us something to think about!

For myself . . . I liked the colors very much . . . and those red flags made for some GREAT accents. The juxtaposition of the red roof and the green tower tops (wonderful complementary colors) is awesome and even Tony admits their placement is spot-on!

As to the composition . . . I completely disagree with Tony. It's outstanding . . . and the award seems to back me up on that . . . I seldom see poor compositions carrying awards. I think the composition is perfect. The foreground, particulary, angles in a nice semi-circular arch that pulls the eye into the composition! Your right side ratio of sky (2), land (3) and water (1) is nicely broken along the rule of thirds with no centrality and that dynamic is furthered by the left-side of the composition which is sky (3), land (2) and water (1) -- Where 3 is most dominant and 1 is least dominant. All the lines, from shoreline to skyline work together in a great harmony pulling the eye into the shot.

Outstanding work Paulo . . . 7/7 (and congrats!)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Shame about the light, the great colours of the buildings would have been favoured by a better illumination.A bit of work in Hue/saturation would been an improvement. The placing of the green domes is perfect although I think the overall composition would be improved by a little less foreground. It would definately make a very nice postcard.
Best regards, Tony
