About This was done in-camera. My pinwheel glowing because I placed blue gels over my lights. Using just the modeling lights, I zoomed a bit at a time throughout a long exposure, thus the appearance of multiple exposures. The background was fabric with sparkles in it.

That will teach me for reading too fast, Doyle. Now that I re-read your method, you already said you were using a remote shutter release. Duh.

I guess I went wrong when I read that you held your breath while releasing the shutter. I assumed you were trying to be steady while touching the camera.

Thanks Dave . . . I'll take a look . . . As it happens I don't even use the cable release . . . I have an IR Remote Shutter release so nothing touches the camera what-so-ever - not even a cable! :)

This is really pretty. There is such a lovely combination of colours beautifully gentle sense of motion. It is like a wonderfully happy dream.

Doyle. When doing the zoom, just be quick and as steady as possible. You might get a little shake but just keep it as low as possible.

If you look at my Rte 66 neon photos, this was the same technique as Shirley used. I did a lot of double takes as well as varying times. On some of the shots, if I touched the zoom too hard, it blew the shot.

As for your night shots, do you have a cable release? A good investment. I have one but never seem to have it handy and that Bogen tripod I have is rather shaky for a heavy duty unit. But invariably, I am always disappointed when I use the shutter button instead of the cable release.

You're very welcome, Shirley. I wondered if it was the same technique I used on the Rte 66 neon in my portfolio.

Thank you so very much, Doyle! Obviously, I am still attracted to colorful and bright shiny objects, too.;)

The zoom on this particular lens is by turning the barrel, so works very smoothly. I zoomed out. Of course, it was on a tripod. Not sure how long my exposure was, but could have been as much as 15 secs. Now, if it had been my other lens...which you push in or out to zoom, there probably would have been camera shake.

Cool colors . . . they remind me of my childhood attraction to bright, shiny objects . . . yesterday . . . uhhhh . . . and today too . . .

The now internationally famous pinwheel . . . once again the creative fodder for a great salvo of artistic merit . . . has made it back! And I like this too . . . it almost has an 'otherworldly' feel to it.

The 'about' section lends a question to my mind: How do you zoom in and out on a long exposure without camera shake? You didn't mention how long the exposure was but I usually try to get a tripod and remote shutter release . . . then back away slowly 30 or 40 paces . . . then lick my finger and hold it up to check for any stirring of the air . . . then hold my breath a click the remote! Clearly we use different methods for long exposures.

Anyway . . . Cool!

Thank you so very much, Dave!:) I stopped for a second or two at each stage, and because the light was weak, it did not register streaking in between.

Wow, very cool, Shirley. You must have been quick on the zoom to each stage because I really don't see much trail of each pin wheel. Or you turned the light off during the zoom?

Very interesting and a really neat abstract.

Best wishes,
Dave
