Nice portrait Doyle! You've captured some emotion in his face and I feel like his eyes are almost trying to tell us his story. I like the detail in the lines of his face too. Great conversion to black and white.

Ray: The trouble is that a good intimate portrait may ALSO fit Newman . . . (See Phillip Minnis' Piano teacher for example) . . . but more research indicates this shot, with the tool cropped from his hand . . . doesn't, in my opinion, fit the Newman any longer.

This is better than the original my friend which I also thought good. It is better because you have cropped away the extraneous details of the original. This IS more intimate and has great power from the intense expression on Gus's face, particularly the eyes. WOW, they are hypnotic Doyle. Still like the original, which had it's own charm, but this is great. I'm not an expert and certainly not in the field of portraiture but I do know what I like and this I love. Well done to you Doyle. All the best.....Ray

Riny: Thanks for the concern about our fires. Thousands of acres are burned . . . hundreds of homes evacuated (of course many have been burned) but mostly this is unihabited, undeveloped land. It happens frequently (even yearly) and my home and family is safely along the coast . . . it's very hot and breezy today so firefighters have their work cut out for them. I'm suprised the news has spread across the pond already . . . But no fears . . . my CAMERA is SAFE!! :)

Oh, Doyle, I agree with your decision!
If you had him working under a car, or changing a tyre, it would be ideal for the new project!
I, actually, uploaded two repeats of my Ann Carr-Boyd photos in to the 'Intimate Portrait' project, today. I did not think they were 100% right for the Arnold Newman one. We'll see how they go.
Good luck, mate - I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!
Cheers
Phil

Thanks Phillip . . . I have changed it to the Intimate Portrait Project since that seems so much more appropriate than the Newman Project . . . although, as you know, one could list portraits either way. This is less like Newman (IMO).

No problem my disowned handi-capable Bro!
(If you're really handicapped that might explain how you hold the camera sooooo steady)! I expect nothing but BRUTAL honesty from you. I had the exact same initial impression from his work but was told that the alternative was elimination of ALL BG. I think perhaps you (and formerly I) were correct about the photo being in the element for which the person is known. Him, for example, smiling from under the hood of a car with tool in hand.
More importantly, I think the project requires famous, rich, powerful or infamous people in their environment (or destitute and homeless . . . a few of them around here too). This coupled with a view of the environment would be the key. My search for a model will continue. Should be somebody in this big city, huh?
*why so grumpy, wheelchair battery low?
:)
Your re-owned Bro!

(standby for critique)
Okay, bro. I've got to say this because I can. I wasn't familiar wioth Newman's work, either. And so in looking at his style, I noticed it was photographing people within their environment so as to give the viewer the story in the photo iteslf, not having to explain it.
In other words, a portrait of Gus would or should include him posing at his tool box with the garage behing him. Or out front of his shop. Something so that you don't have to explain who he is and what he does.
That was my impression of Newman's work. A simple b&w head shot of some unknown person is not going to cut it. Maybe if he was so recognizable, say, like JFK, this portrait would work.
* disclaimer. I am grumpy today. Don't take it personally.
Best wishes, Dave Doyle's disowned twin brother.
