oh my God...the details are superb here... the hairy top of the dragonly looks great...good lighting, good support from the dark background... I really cannot ask something more from a photo like that one... absolutely excellent.
be well!

Ok first of all Dave, I probably shouldn't even offer a critique here because I have posted some dragonfly photos and they can't compete in the least with this one but I did notice one thing the discolorations on the leaf kept drawing my eye away from the dragonfly. This could be because this is a "Critiquer's Corner" image. I think maybe a little cloning could reduce or remove these discolorations. I hope that this helps.
Best wishes,
Garold

hey Dave, I don't think Miles ever had a Fiji camera...there simular to Canon's in that they
'boost' your image with their in camera processing a little more than necessary some times...it makes for more dramatic photos, but some people don't think there pure enough (the photos that is).
anyway I think Miles was talking about the following 'corrections'....I still like your original...never did like anything 'too pure'
cheers

great work Dave....I might have just taken that lower left hand corner out (by just cloning leaf pattern over that plant stem)...
like the blackened out background too...cheers

Dave,
I have noticed that a few of your images appear over-sharp and pointed it out to you a few weeks ago. Not on all, but on some. Is it possible that when you up-load the image that you leave the up-load on the "medium" default setting that Usefilm starts off with?
Maybe try "light" or none, with the same image and see how it comes out.
Just a suggestion.
I don't think it has anything to do with the 3.1 megapixel image.
Andre

Hi Dave,
Beautiful Macro, I ment to get some of these last week too, but never seemed to come up with the opportunity :(
Maybe next week?
You got the focus nicely on the head and thorax of this one. You probably have a few more with the fantastic wings featured?
Did you notice the marking and colouring in the eye looks a lot like one of those alien head images?

Hi Miles, thanks for your insightful comment! No need to be sorry, that's what Critiquer's corner is all about! This wasn't a large crop, although it's a 3.1 megapixel image so that could contribute to the effects you see. I'll have to brush up on my sharpening techniques, though, thanks for pointing that out.
Dave.

Outstanding capture and I'm sure was not an easy one to get. I still think all you dragonfly people put super glue on the leaves to trap the little guys. As for an honest critique, in my opinion, it is a wonderful shot with the focus on the head on the dragonfly, unfortunately it blurred the wing. That's the only thing I can see that could be improved. Beautiful!

An excellent capture of a resting dragonfly Dave. The details in this fascinating insect are just awesome. The hairs on it's legs are razor sharp and as plain as could be and the bulk of it's body looks far too heavy when we see the delicate structure of it's wings. Well done to you my friend. I'm on my usual catch-up following my week's work. My very best wishes to you as always.....Ray

Sorry, I'm going to go against the rest of the comments so far. To me the image looks over sharpened, and lacks fine clear detail. Is it a crop from a larger image? ... That could explain the loss of clarity in the fine details. Personally I would use Photoshop "curves" to reduce the brightness in the leaf, and not sharpen this nearly so much to try to reduce the grainy and almost posterised effect on the insect. Sorry...

These critters are not easy to photograph, however you captured this one very well. The selective DOF allows his body to pop out of the image. Colors and lighting are good. I can find no fault.
