Thanks Gayle: I appreciate the comments very much since portraiture is new to me. I had thought the softer focus was better for portraits but have since reconsidered that. At least the eyes need the sharp focus anyway . . . the goal was to get the image to reflect the 'about' section so that I knew I was capturing the essence of the person . . . so I really appreciate that comment!

hi and thanks for feedback on my B/W window shot...a very good entry for the new project showing a proud man in his element...like the exposure and only miss a tad more sharpness to the eyes...good conversion to B/W and dof The about does indeed enhance what is conveyed thru the shot... regards, gayle

Thanks Michele . . . he struck me as a proud man too and I'm glad the portrait conveyed that. It means a lot to hear others get the same impression. While he is neither rich nor famous . . . he has every reason to be proud. He leads an honorable life! Thanks so much.

Thanks Jessie . . . I was going to make an extremely funny comment about the four repeated messages and relate it to "hard of hearing" issues. Then I realized I couldn't think of one! :P

doyle - hope that this message only gets through ONCE! sorry. anyway - i am new at this portrait stuff, too. my daughter won't sit still and look normal for the camera any more - she feels the need to act like a diva. sigh. you know, it is the interview that informs the lens, i agree. i love this conversation we're having. to me, words make the photo. a photo alone can't always have the impact that the accompanying words can - for instance, i was looking at these remarkable photos by janet marie here, last night - from new zealand. her photos were incredible. yet it was her notes, that said they were taken on her walk to school (teaching), that made it seem perfect. your words abt gus and bert MADE the photo. thanks!!

Wow Jessie . . . I totally appreciate that comment. I am new at this but do interview my portrait subjects to get a "feel" for them. Then I try to get an appropriate portrait that reflects, accurately, the view I have. This makes your comment that much more meaningful for me.

Thanks Melanie . . . I think you're right about the "rules" (guidelines) being a flexible thing. I just wanted to know what they were . . . and then modify my shots to suit my taste! Perhaps I'll just do my thing and the critiques will let me know what "rules" have been violated! :P

To be honest, Doyle, I really don't know much about the "rules" of portraiture! I just go by what looks good to me. I love detail, and while softness works in a lot of situations, I think with this particular "character" showing all of the littled details in his face would actually benefit this portrait.
I think you got some good advice from, Howie, though! He knows what he's talking about more than I do!

Lovely mono tones to this semi-informal portrait Doyle, great lighting and I am at ease with soft focus in these situations. Indeed, many years ago I owned a purpose-built soft focus lens. I love the cheerful expression on his face the many character laughter lines. A wonderful 'about' to accompany a very pleasing shot. Well done to you my friend. My very best wishes to you as always....Ray

Thanks Jessie! I love knowing that some people do take the time to read the 'about' sections. I love even more when people are nice enough to give information in them! That being said; I try to always do it myself (a lead by example philosophy). Your comments have made me feel good about this first experience in portraits . . . Thanks!

Thanks Melanie! This is the info I'm looking for. As I understood it . . . portraits were 'supposed' to be a tad softer to help the subjects look better. Too sharp would show too many potential (for example) wrinkles and other issues that need not be conveyed to portray an image well. Was this incorrect? I didn't want too 'harsh' an image. Perhaps I need to "split the difference" and shoot sharper, but not "Macro Sharp"? I really appreciate your taking the time to offer your opinions. Thank you.

I like the expression Doyle and he looks a real character. For me, his eyes and the way he is standing is a little central and straight on. Try composing the eyes into 1/3 position and turn him slightly side on. You could also shoot from a higher angle for a change of style :) Good effort.

I think this is a great portrait. Great detail and you can really see his personality shining through. The lighting is nice, no odd shadows or anything like that on his face.
The only thing I could see that could possibly be better is the focus. It's a tad soft, but otherwise, what a portrait is alla about!
