I guess it must have been wonderful there, the endless sea and some people on ship.. It get get quite unpleasant at times, but looking out and reading a good book or looking the stars in the nights - wonderful!
I think I'll try some excursion over the sea - almost forgot how it feels.

Dear Nick
The waters in the North Sea (Nordsøen) indeed are wild and rough. I went on a cruise to the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland years ago, and we didn´t see as much as one ship on our way, and the cold ocean was rough, and many people got seasick. Fortunately I didn´t and was able to enjoy every bit of the journey.

Your father must have had a wonderful life sailing the oceans. Nothing compares to sailing and to entering different countries from the sea.

I thank you, Annemette, and all the nice people around for the kindest comments! I can only hope that my eyes were open.
I wish now, I could also shoot some of those somewhat more mystic and wild waters, just like those that the ancient mariners of your country had to face. What magnificent pictures they could be! I think I have to travel to the coast of "Nordsee" or "Mordsee", as the German say (Murder sea).
BTW, my father was a mariner and I visited him on ship often. "Nordsee" - how we call that in Englisch? and in Danish? - was always the picture of a grandious nature that lets humans look like flies on the wall! To travel in that sea during a storm... well, you don't have much to fear if you manage to somehow get away - I mean... ahhmm, living! ;-)

And imagine that I had quite my doubts first about posting this, and the other water pattern photo, since I thought that it was a bit of... perhaps too boring or too "low" in expression. But at the end that inner feeling won, that says to us that sonething is nice.
BTW, we all seem to have some kind of compass for such subtle orientation in the world of beaty, don't we?

Thank you very much Andre! Exactly this is what I think about sharpening in conjuction to this image. I tried many variations but they don't really work.
So it seems that absolut sharpness is not always *the* criterium, doesn't it?

I agree with Rina on this one. You don't want to sharpen it any more. The softness of the image is what gives it that water "skin" look, like when you see those water spiders gliding over the top of the water.

Actually I also don't want to sharpen it, I only wnated to know what you think about sharpness on that photo, but it seems we have the same opinion here. But nonetheless the PS-advices are really great and will surely be useful to me in the future!

No, I don't feel it needs sharpening at all. I particularly like the softness of this image. However, if you do decide to try sharpening, I can see two *possible* issues arising that may/not be worth considering:
Firstly, it may wind up accentuating those floating specks on the surface of the water which would more likely than not, only prove to become an annoying distraction. Now, you could carefully clone out the specks first of course, making them virtually non-existent (and therefore not an issue), but how much time do you want to spend on it and would that be the type of enhancement that makes you uncomfortable?
Secondly, it may also accentuate the slight hint of grain that is already present and harshen the outline of curves, thereby compromising the intended(?) appearance of a smooth satin-like texture. That is not to say the results will look bad, it may well be an improvement, it'll just have a different look and feel about it.
If you are able to get access to Photoshop CS2, I would recommend trying the Smart Sharpen tool as it will afford you more options and flexibility than Unsharp Mask does. A truly incredible piece of software that I'm sure you would enjoy learning to use.
Anyway, I've rambled on long enough :)) After all that, I hope I actually answered your question! LOL!

Indeed, I also find that the simplicity, the purity if you like, of some scenes in nature can be unbelievably beautiful. It might be that the simple is not always genial, but the genial is always simple - and we get the proof of this out there in front of our eyes. So I think I was also lucky to be out there at the right moment.

Hi Nick,
I really like the simplicity in this scene, and the capture of the patterns in nature (hey! Congrast on the BIP) The reflection in the waves emphasises the ripples nicely. Besides, I think the compostion is very well balanced. Good shot-very good shot!
