Hi, Susie. I would be glad to make some suggestions, but here is a very rough example. Better to start with the original, of course, because I had to remove the vignetting.
In PS you don't have to make a separate layer. Just select the background with the magic wand and apply "distort/diffuse glow" from the filter gallery on filter tab. Select the degree of backlight you want. It seemed to work without selecting inverse first. If you want to apply glow to the enter image you can add an even more ethereal effect for this angel by going to layer/layer via copy and returning to filter gallery and adjust the amount there.

What a angelic little girl. I love the ring of flowers incircling her hair, give the quaility of a little fairy. The vignetting is perfect for this picture as it causes one to focus right into her face. Nice soft texture of her skin. No too sharp!!!

You're right Trace, I'm glad we are done with it. I don't think that wedding photography is my forte! Kathy and I both enjoyed it because it was our neice, but boy, stressful is right! I don't know how professional wedding photographers do it.

Hi Leora,
I applied a vignette to this to darken the b/g. Are you talking about doing kind of a reverse vignette to lighten up the b/g or how would I give it a backlit effect? I love hearing new ideas and suggestions. Anything you have to share is most appreciated. I agree, the post production is fascinating!

She is a beauty, Susie, and very natural.
Have you tried layers to work separately on the background? It looks "burned in". It might even be nice if you went to the opposite extreme and gave it more of a backlit effect.
I really enjoy the "post-production" as much as the photography.

What a poser! The lighting is nice with just enough non-obtrusive emphasis on the background. I she had held a reflector with her free hand, it would have put a little light under her chin, too. However, I doubt she would have posed so charming and spontaneously.
