About My father dropped by today. At the time, I was in the yard photographing the blooming flowers in the yard. At the request of my father to sit down and take a brake, I made sure that he sat in the kitchen near the setting sun. ;)

This is my first attempt at taking portrait photographs of "people". I just kept rolling off images of my father, as he sat there recalling stories of my childhood. He turns 70 in a few weeks, and it's time I start to capture this wonderful time!

So... this is the start of the series of my father, Allen.

working with the color, I found that because i was starving for light with an iso800 setting, the image found it's was to glorious b/w, with a slight sepia hint. The grain was my deciding factor to go b/w.

comments welcome!

Now this is a real challenge for you Joel. People shots. Way different than those dolls with strange markings on them. I though at 1st he was a little tense, those eyes seem to be piercing through you. But there is a hint of a smirk so he is relaxing a little but possibly getting tired/bored. Can't say if this is the 1st shot or the 30th that he sat for. I don't know that I like the harsh light on the left side but you are the expert on light and I can still make out the detail so I guess it is fine. His eyes look a little tired but he is seventy. My father had the same eyes but I didn't have the camera bug to appreciate them. Too bad since it was he who bought me my first camera 30 years ago. Enjoy his company for sure. Regards Ron.

New car saturday. Now my wife's car is in the shop - hit some road debris on Friday and mashed up the Prius. Should have the new computer today so I can get back into posting on UF.

An intence portrait. B&W looks very good for this picture. Sharp with nice grey tones, just a bit of hot spots in the high lights, still a great capture.

hi Joel.. have a great father, photogenic, perfect subject for the portrait.. the skin evident and the deep eye.. maybe the composition is little decentered my friend but is not to problem, for my humble opinion or to litle cut the the right part or to openspace in the same part ..other you have composed a great sepia (quadtones)..very powerful!!
all my best wishes
roby

Great crop Joel and fabulous light! This is a very nice portrait, I like your choice of black and white, it emphasizes his great eyes. Your father doesn't look anywhere near 70! Very nice first attempt at people portraits. Well done!

Cheers
Janet Marie ;-)

Joel,

This is a wonderful portrait, I think the slight sepia added along with the grain add a timeless quality to this image.

Tell me, what was on your fathers mind?

Keep the portraits coming!

Regards,
John

Ambient light, late afternoon or early morning, I don't think you can go wrong, especially with B+W, which will bring out the contrast.

Hi Joel,

Although this iss a rather classic composition in portraiture, I generally speaking like to see a bit more of the hair and the neck including shoulders of the "portraitee" To me, that tells more about a person by making the pose and bodylanguage a part of the scene.

The stern look in his eyes, with a rather kind look and expression, emphasised by the subtle smile already tells a lot.

Good moments - enjoy them whenever you can!

Cheers,

Hugo
