Overall this is a beautiful photo. The delicate, low key, color really works well here. I like the composition also.
The one thing that bothers me greatly is the lack of sufficient depth of field. Only the front horse is really in focus. The background is a bit too soft, and the foreground is completely out of focus. What would have helped here is to use the smallest aperture possible, and the depth of field scale, if your camera has one, to set the focus point.
I hope that you won't take offense, but I've done a little cropping and sharpening here to illustrate my point. Please let me know if you agree or disagree. Aside fron the focus, I think that this is a fine photo.

Good control of tones here in this bright light John. The coat is terrific but so are the colours in the trees in the distance.

Excellent composition, John! I like the way the three horses form a line diagonally through the frame, and the partial reflection of the nearest horse. The grove of trees really balances the scene.
