There is such limited access to the Pointe Vincente Lighthouse that it's really hard to get a good shot of it.

The composition here is beautiful with the palm trees to the right and left.

It's a shame the chain link fence is visible, it takes just a little bit away of the beauty of the rocky bluff area and the lighthouse.

Thanks Chris . . . the auto settings were checked on the RAW file when opened. What does ACR stand for?

"The shutter speed on this was 1/1000s . . . the focal length was 300mm; aperture was f/5.6 with ISO 220."

OK, so telephoto lens shake is probably out of the question, esp. if taken on a tripod as well.

When you open the RAW file, check that the 'Auto' settings aren't checked. If the shot was under exposed at all, and then the Auto exposure and brightness is applied in ACR, it can push the image farther than it can handle - like 1-2 stops.

Chris - The shutter speed on this was 1/1000s . . . the focal length was 300mm; aperture was f/5.6 with ISO 220. With 300mm length I thought the minimum shutter speed was 1/600s. Having used the tripod . . . I assume this had more to do with the jpeg conversion and image reduction.

Ray:
A good point but in fact I did use a tripod. I need to check into the shutter speed - Focal length used so that I can respond to Chris and see what happened. (Cannot check the original image from work....and working on a deadline at home.) This is a new lens to me and I'll have to evaluate my settings but I believe I lost the edge by working on the Jpeg and THEN resizing to upload . . . causing some loss . . . instead of resizing BEFORE converting the RAW to Jpeg. Hugo sent me some pointers to check into later and when I get the F/stop and Shutter speed I'll add them as always. Appreciate the comment though.

I love this perspective Doyle. The lighthouse looks great in the company of all those trees surrounding it. There are good details colours and textures here but Chris has a point regarding the blur to this lovely composed shot. Handheld telephoto shots always react to our natural vibrations and the full length of your zoom would need a fast shutter speed or better still a tripod. Still looks a good shot though my friend. Very best wishes....Ray

I agree with you Laura . . . I think the bluffs add a little something extra to the image (not to mention the ocean itself).

Good shot of this beauty! The colors and details are great. I think I like the other shot best though, gives a good glimpse of the surroundings.

Hi Doyle, I like this closer view more so than the previous upload.

Again, the sharpness seems a bit off. What shutter speed were you using w/ the 70-300mm lens? And do you remember what the approx. focal length was (70mm, 300mm)? If you werent using a tripod/monopod and not shooting w/ a shutter 2x the focal length (over about 150mm) this could be the reason for the slight blur/softness.

Cheers,
Chris
