Hey J-E: Diggin through the 'gems from the past'? Hehehehee . . . You're right about the participation level dipping (for now) and I do have some ideas as to why . . . but--for now--would rather not discuss that and it would seem more appropriate as an e-mail conversation than here . . . my address is in my profile. Give it a couple of weeks and watch it . . . then we can discuss it if you wish.

Laurie: Thank you so much for looking and taking the time to contribute your well thought out and articulate response to the critique request posed by this image. I liked Steve's suggestion and posted a different shot that would encapsulate them to some extent . . . from a different beach. You are right that the geometry (which I only noticed when the beach was vacant) . . . it does catch the eye. As to the light stand shadow . . . I thought it was (with the white lines in the parking) almost making an arrow point to draw the eye into the scene. So, once again, thank you for the commentary . . . it's very appreciated.

Hi Doyle, Just so you've got some sort of straw poll here, I'd like to echo Steve Aronoff's comments to some extent... what I love about this picture is the really unusual geometry... it took some looking before I realised I was drawn (as you obviously were) to the four rectangular blocks in theis picure, almost colour fields. But not only that, the parking lane lines alos made a contribution, and I can live with the light stand except for the way its shadow clashes with those lines. I think there's so much to like about this image, including the stumpy posts that recur in the sand, the ship that provides a distant focal point a la "Raft of the Medusa".

Steve: Thanks for the comment . . . I had initially considered that for this image but could not bear to crop out the more vivid color or the clouds that would need to be cut . . . but I have a few more images from that day to check and may end up with something along those lines. Thanks for the suggestion though . . . always love hearing fresh ideas!

Great shot, Doyle. I love the palette and interesting textures. For a variation you might consider cropping off the top in such a way that you have four horizontal bands of approximately equal width. Not better, just different. Well done! STeve

Wow Nick! Love hearing back from you . . . I know the sea calls. Yes the wind was quite fierce here. A cold front moving in long before the storm . . . and a North wind to boot. Around here, that's the cold one, not the wet one. Wind is invisible, although Hugo could see it in the sand (as I'm sure you could). What you termed "the street" is actually parking so that the millions of Southern Californians could enjoy it. Spoiled by good weather, however, the beach is bare. The funny thing is . . . in fog or rain . . . with miles of beach . . . I prefer the beach. In 80 degree sun . . . with thousands of people . . . I prefer almost anywhere else. I'll have more soon! Thanks so much for the kind comment.

Welcome back John . . . I love hearing from you. I appreciate the thought that the ship is incidental (and agree with it) but I changed that by titling this capture "Passing By" making it more than just incidental. Had the title NOT called attention to that, but to the parking as you suggest, I would heartily agree, but Hugo's dead-on right (In my opinion). I could tell you that I very much appreciate your comments to the other side . . . because I do. I also value your comments and work throughout my portfolio. Imagine how crowded the beach would be if each parking spot was filled. You probably read this composition better than I . . . I trust you'll keep in touch!

The sea is really boiling in this one, Doyle. And the amount of finest detail on the water surface make this dramatically apparent!
The sky is the other pole of this, the peaceful and quite element.
And at the connection line between the two, a ship is going its way.
I tried to cut away the street but it completelly changed the photo. The street is an essential part of the photo, but I still can't figure out why! Any ideas?
Anyway, a very very nice capture!

I see we've both been on the beach today!
I'm not too worried about the ship being in the centre as I feel it is somewhat incidental to the image. What strikes me is that unexpected juxtaposition of the car park and the beach, and the echo of the sea beyond. I like the overall layered effect - a fine image in my view.
John

By the way Laura . . . I'd not concern myself with exchanging commentary with any person who thinks their work compares in any way to my "snapshot" . . . some people do anything for attention; it's often best to deny them that.

Hugo: I will have to go back and look at the pre-crop version. I completely agree that the placement of the ship in the center was not optimal. I'm almost certain that I had issues with yet another pole (or something) on the right which forced a sort of framing issue that I was hoping to avoid . . . but that may have been a lifeguard capture I will be posting soon so I need to verify and perhaps think about a second version . . . Thanks for the helpful comments.

I see no strong center or point of view to this image. This is more of a quick snapshot than a carefully considered composition.

Hi Doyle, very cool colours, and a nicely layered composition. The lines in the deserted beach emphasise the gale force winds visible in the waves; Cool shot! Just curious why you placed the freighter in the middle of the image, Maybe placing it more to the left (as the ship is heading to the right) would've been a slightly stronger solution. Just a thought.
Cheers,
Hugo
