About A scan from a small color print (3x5?) made with a 6x7 negative.

Mamiya Super 23 Press w/6x7 back
100mm lens (I think)

Window light, f4.0, 1/30 second.
160 ISO Portra 120 film.

I've messed with it a lot, and gone back to this one. The color print looks pretty good, I just can't get a decent color scan with my old scanner (my excuse..blame the scanner). Not sure where to put this one.

Hey, I'll post a shot of her laughing someday!

Very dramatic portrait... I love this! The darkness and contrast add a lot to the moodiness of this. It looks almost as if the chair were floating... it's very cool like that! Excellent work, I love it!!

Beautifully lit portrait of this lovely looking little girl Kes and it looks especially appealing in these great mono tones. The pose and the expression you have captured are both wonderful. This is really superb work....Well done to you.

This is just a brief visit for now but I will surely return. You have an excellent portfolio with great variety to your work. I have read your bio with great interest and I am sure that you deserve to use the very finest of equipment to exploit your undoubted talent. I'll be back. Very best wishes to you......Ray

A very strong image Kes. She is filled with emotion and the dark colors really accentuate that. Great job. Well presented.

Whatever you did with it, it has worked out very well. Of course the girl, her pose and expression, are magnificent, but I also like the high contrast black and white. And I would not crop it further. The darkness is part of the image.

Hi Andre,

Thanks for your comment...I also like this shot/crop as is.

Like Sammy said, it has an "in-another-space" quality, which I think is what you expressed also.

When initially considering crops, I too thought the sense of vastness and being alone would be reduced. I thought of calling this shot "Not a Perfect World"...because the shot isn't perfect, and the mood of the shot perhaps conveys that neither is the world.

The crop series idea might work well...using film really slows down the photo output...

Hi Kes,
I looked at this one earlier and came back to comment after another look. I liked this one earlier and I think I like it more the second time around. I usually feel the need to crop this kind of image closer, as others have suggested. But in this case, the feeling of total isolation would be diminished, if you came in closer. The total darkness, even around the bare feet and chair leg, leave a strange sensation of floating in air, or even a sort of suspension in darkness.
I think it might be worth a series, done in the same style.
The little girl seems very isolated and alone with her doll.
On the other hand, that might not have been your intention. If not, by all means crop closer and get her smiling and laughing, like you suggest in the about.
Andre

Thanks Wouter! It does look like an old photo! If you look at many old time portraits, you'll notice they don't have many smiles. Like this shot, they often used slow shutter speeds...and it is harder to "hold" a smile than a "serious" expression. Or so I've heard..

A tighter crop would look good too. If I get a hi-res scan of the neg I'll crop it closer.

Thanks Sammy.

Agree with your crop...I intended to do that - move her to the left a bit.

I also an have idea for a panorama type view with a lot of negative space added on the right and some on the top perhaps.

I scanned this one at 600dpi, then did one at 2400dpi. Yikes, what a big file that was.

Those pale legs really lit up. Toned down the doll's leg a bit and sharpened & cleaned up the scanner dust.

Might get a print made from the negative someday.

I'll check the mail...

Love it Kes!

If it were me, I would have cropped it closer on the top and left. But your version gives it that in-ANOTHER-space feel.

BTW You have e-mail

Very mysterious mood. It looks a bit like a very old photograph. I don't think a color version could have been better than this.

Only a minor note; i would like to see a slightly tighter cropped image.
