About
St. Michaels School. Built by an order of nuns on the Navajo Reservation in the early 20th century. It was a boarding school, taking a large number of Navajo children and day students from the local area around Window Rock. I have always been fascinated by the way Katherine Drexel chose this type of Italian renaissance architecture for this location. I was a student there once upon a time long ago. This is where I learned to speak the Navajo language... and got punished by the nuns along with my Indian companions for doing so. Heathen was one of many words I remember being used. So much for church.
