About We have a family of wild kookaburras that come in for a feed of chopped steak occassionally. They have a large sharp beak but no tongue, so they have to toss their food to the back of their throat to swallow. Because of this we cannot give them mince, or ground meat, as it is too fine and can get stuck in the bottom of their beak and rot, sometimes causing illness and even death. They naturally mainly feed on small reptiles, worms, mice and frogs.

What a great capture Ann. And a wonderful instructional "about". I've never heard of these gorgeous birds before. Your focus is just perfect.

Thank you, Bruce. Yes, actually he had just had a feed. We don't give them a lot, as we don't want them to become dependant on us. It's just an extra treat really. Then I can take their photo. Cheers, Ann.

Ann, When I back packed Australia in 1988, We ended upon on Magnetic Island and an old man that we stopped and spoke with had a piece of stake and would cut off a piece and hold it up in the air on the blade and a Kookaburra would swoop down and take it. This brings back fond memories. My other favorite bird from the trip was the Jabarroo (sp). Thank you for your wonderful photo - Christian
