i agree with another poster, this is a great shot but the surfer is just a little too close to the edge.... actually if i couldnt redo the shot, i think i would have just cut the surfer out and pasted him somewhere else in the frame. cheating but who is the wiser?
good work anyway and best wishes ~ james

great photo... love the composition... the sky is awesome... I like the surfer but understand the comments, would be nice to have a bit more room for him. Maybe go the opposite way and crop the front part of the board, at least it would look more intentional :)

Hey Gayle, thanks for popping in, you've spoiled me with your attention! :) That poor poor surfer... he's caused quite a stir here My own fault really, should have gone with my gut feeling and left him out. However, as Andre suggested, I can just as easily move him over if I really want to keep him ;) I'd only do it if I was going to print though. For scale.
On a different note, was pleasantly surprised with my first critique on this. Lessons learned maybe???

hi, i have some similar shots, but i never see these cloud formations over the Pacific Ocean out my way as is usually just a solid mass of fog or grey,so i usually end up changing the toning....lovely black and white pts.(the haystacks and the white of the surf),nice proportion of sky to beach, good reflections and my fave part, the sheen of the water on the beach!...personally i would crop out the surfer as he is too little and almost out of frame...delish moody atmosphere regards, gayle

.....just looked at this, she comes alive when blown up a bit to view, what a (whatta) place, I thought (like some other bleedin' experts it would appear!) old mate could have done the right thing and been a little more 'in the picture', it has atmosphere doesn't it?.....good composition, I usually go frantic about horizons in the middle of the frame but it seems to work here so I'll shut it, that's me on the cliff top in mi' mack, it looks quite cold, this is pleasant, well done Rina. cheers, david.

Hi Rina, I'm not even going to tell you how old my version of photoshop is :)
I think if you had to write out how to make a cup of coffee, it would seem complicated :) Andre

Andre, yes, that's exactly how I would go about it. It does sound complicated when written out like that, but in reality, would take me about 5-10 minutes. I've only just recently upgraded to PSCS2 from PS7. What a leap that was!

Hi Rina, there might be no wind, no swell, but it sure has a helluva threatening cloud, and a great contrast. Very moody. Very cool. The damp beach and the heavy silhouettes just make it tick. Thoughts? Hmmm Apart from these.... nope. Not really. A very good shot, but then, there's The surfer... yeah. Guess enough has been said about him, so I won't go into that..:)
Cheers,
Hugo

Rina, It seems you are using PS so moving him over should be fairly easy to do, and worth a try.
Do you use a method similar to this, or some other method? I would cut him out with his reflection and the waves and horizon, then drag him over just a bit. Be careful to match up the horizons as well as you can. Make a duplicate copy of the whole image and cut out a small section of the sand, wave, horizon without the surfer in it. Then drag that over to cover up the original surfer in the first image. The next step would be to blow up the keeper image and blend in any miss matches with a smudge tool or something like that. (I have an old version of photoshop, so you might know of an easier way.) Sometimes I find it easier to start off with duplicate images so that you can just pick areas from one of them and lay them on the keeper copy without making blank areas in the keeper image.
On another note, the surfer will still be small in the image, so that's why I thought the pano view would work well. Hope this helps and is not to confusing. It sounds a lot more complicated than it really is. Andre

Andre, that's a great idea. Funny, have been sitting here with my teenage daughter, trying to explain why the surfer's position is not ideal, and I think I've heard the winning response: "But mum, why didn't you just move him over???" So simple, now that I think about it!

Hi Rina, Here is my take on this image. Just wanted to add to the discussion on whether the surfer should be in the image or not. What if you had just a little more space in front of were he is walking (but not much) and then turned the image into a panaramic view, cutting away just below the rock reflection and just above the highest rock? I know you lose a lot of those great clouds that way, but it would emphasis the story that Douglas was talking about. (surfer walks out of the picture) Andre

I like how you captured this scene, the glass like reflection on the ground is fabulous. I read some of the comments here and they differ in opinions. I think I like the inclusion of that surfer though I think it really is very near the edge but i like the mood with its inclusion. I also like the dramatic clouds, it also adds to the modd of the image, like a storm is coming. nice shot!

A wonderful dramatic skyline my love and a great composition as well. Maybe the comments of others are technically correct regarding the surfer but I for one am glad you left him in. He has a fabulous reflection to offer the shot and a sense of scale is provided with his presence. All the other attributes of your vertical composition are still here in this beautifully toned presentation. Well done to you my lovely Rina. A great big hug, my best wishes and a huge smacker on your lips.....Ray x

levels is a very subtle tool and it works beautifully here apart from the retreating figure this is totally awesome.. one second later he would have been gone and it would have lifted the image soo soo much

Thanks Kathy! Strange sky, found it hard to choose a crop point that would effectively 'close' the image, but yours is a good example. Yeah, I try to stay away from framing as much as possible unless it's in absolute harmony with the image. Even then it will be the simplest border and matting style. Love what Brian Underdown does with his... but then he sells his as posters (??) and I don't really think the world is ready to pay for my work yet, no matter how I present it LOL!
Thanks again for taking the time. Much appreciated!

Hi Rina, As I looked at this I was thinking that the reflection of the surfer is cool, but he really is too close to the edge of the frame. In my opinion a bit of the sky should go, too. I think the strongest part of the image is in the beach. I don't know if you ever put frames on your images (I know that some people don't like them) but I think it would improve the shot. Okay...enough talk...I'm attaching a different version. What do you think? Kathy

I wondered if I'd get away with the surfer ;) I left him in purely because of the decent reflection there. You're right though Douglas, should have cropped him out entirely. I do appreciated your honest feedback on this. Cheers.

A descent image indeed and a trite satisfactory in it's soothing drama also. The contrast levels in adjustment work fine to 'strengthen the silhouettes' as you say but which also means the exposure was not recorded properly 'In The Field' or 'On Location' ...
With an 18 - 55 ultra-wide one would have to assume you would have been able to compose correctly also as to leave a bit more space to leave the surfer in the frame with a bit more clearance, but I guess you wanted to have him walk right 'Out of the Picture' because there were no swells to enjoy which enhances that fact although not contributing essentially to the beauty of the image, so ... crop him out entirely I say ... Anyone else ... ?
Thanks for sharing nevertheless ...
