About 3 lights, and a bounce card (the kitchen table), were used to re-create the lighting of a generic space ship interior, as seen in a 1.85 aspect ratio. The subject tonight... a 3 foot tall acupuncture doll. The cucoloris is my hand, and the back wall is being played by the blinds on the kitchen window. Photoshop used to crop, and convert to sRGB for UF.

Yes, the subject did a very good job! ..and cheap too!

Thank you very much Petal! I learned a great deal from this image, and the comments from it. It does have it's own quality when you look at the others in the series.. this one is so flat... should have turned his head.. or maybe he wasn't being too compliant. :)

cheers!

Neat shot of an unusual but very compliant subject... ;-D!! Great lighting... and much more 'professional' than my ceiling lights that happened to be there setup... Love the format and the off center position, but I also think that turning the head would make a better pic. Well done!! I've got one small remark about the lighting/background though... I find the light 'circle' on the bottom (in between the title and your name) a bit distracting... but hey that's me...

Thank you very much!

1.85 is a width/height aspect ratio for movie. Sometimes it's a gate (matte) that's infront of the lens when a movie is shot. Lately, movies won't shoot w/ a gate to get the full image so they can release the movie later on DVD for TV, and not look letterboxed. At the theaters, they'll drop a gate over the lens for the correct aspect ratio. (same for a letterbox dvd).

I feel that with this series, the 1.85 gave the images a cinematic, wide screen, look to them. Most stills you see from movies are in this aspect ratio..so your eye will somewhat trick you mind into thinking it's seeing a movie still!

Thanks again for your comments! you're so right about being able to trace the highlights... now that you mention it, looking at the other images, this one looks flat. Thanks for that!

cheers,
-Joel

generally I think the lighting is good, since this is a white subject, it is not easy to trace the highlights. I don't understand fully your about, I don't really know what is the 1.85 aspect ratio. Is that the fraction of nature??? What i see here is a good composition of this accupuncture doll with a good light. Very interesting markings on this doll, looks like chinese character but its not. The hint of lines at the background is preferable than a plain flat background..
nice shot Joel!

Thanks Phil!

Yes... the kitchen table looked like I was interrigating a suspect. It was a fun one to setup! Tonight, when I get home, ..gonna setup another one that's 3/4 view, and my inspiration is going to be '2001 Space Odyssey' :

Hugo,

Thank you so much for your comments! I agree with you on the 3/4 view. I have a series of these that I took tonight that I would like to get online.

It is kinda like a mug shot.... good call. I was going for that stark, sterile profile that you would get when you're watching a robot....ala Ian Holm is "Alien". (huge fan).

Thanks again for your suggestion on the angle! I'll work on that one next.

cheers!

Hi Joel,

Very well lit photo, and I like the rather extreme off centered composition. I'd only would've liked to stare the doll a bit more in the face, 1/4th profile would do; 3/4th probably too much of a mug shot already. Very good colours, and thanks for sharing the set up, intention and settings for this shot, very useful. I think the background with the ever so subtle texture in it is a very good call; it shows the right tone, and is vivid enough to add just that little extra to this photo. Good stuff.

Cheers,

Hugo
