I was really trying to play with the DOF, and determine how much flexibility my different lenses have with the same object, although this object never stayed still for long!! So it was challenging. I feel I quite like the DOF here, with the focus tapering off in line with the "tail" of the dragon. However, in reflection I should have considered the background a bit more I think... the lighter spots detract, I think? Your thoughts?

Hehe, I was lucky, my lens wasn't expensive at all, because someone very kindly gave it to me when he no longer used Pentax (he moved to Nikon), and when I casually said I was saving up for a telephoto lens he said he would be very happy to give me his old lens. So I was very lucky and I am very grateful.
Also, my mistake, it is Pentax SMC F, not FA. So maybe not as expensive? You seem to know your equipment extensively.
Now, to take some more good photos so that I can send him a thank you card with the results!
