About The same concept as Zabriskie's Void I and Zabriskie's Void II

is is a full frame, uncropped photo from the first series I shot with the Lensbaby in The mudstone caterpillars near Zabriskie Point, Death Valley.

Thanks for your extremely useful feedback on the previous photos. I've taken your critiques into account, and I've changed the sequence accordingly, to a slightly less extreme photo. Once again, your feedback is very much appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

Excellent composition, it remembers to me the Antonioni's masterpiece (do you remember the Pink Floyd Soundtrack...?)

wow, Hugo!
looking at this shot, i feel myself like someone who's falling from a steep slope!
vertigo... lost of control... adrenaline...
it remember me of my great times when i was a downhill biker...
imho, this is the strongest shot of the tryptic
really good experience with this strange and out-of-schemes kind of lens
Ciao!

Hi Thilo, Thanks. This has been a very educational experience about the Lensbaby effects... I think I'll ease down on it's use from now on...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo,

I feel like being in outer space. you managed to capture this scenery very well, and the lensbaby adds some weirdness to a weird place.

good one!

Option 3: Breaking the weird and uncomfortable feeling you (and others) mentioned in your comment on the first one. A feeling of escape and victory, I think. But it doesn't fit.

Option 3. Unfitting victory?

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 3/21/2006
Option 2: Continuing on the second photo, but zooming in more. I think the lensbaby effect is way too strong here, disregarding the fact that the primary subject is out of focus.

Option 2: Zooming in on the second image

Hi Max, in return, I would like to thank you too for your reply! There are a few ways to "fix" the slanted construction thing in Photoshop, if you want, I'll gladly have a go at it...

Thanks for your comment too; I know that this isn't quite your type of photo. Following the received pointers on the previous two lensbaby photos, I've changed the sequence. Initially, the third shot had the human presence in it too, and considering this triptych, I can only agree with you. I've considered three conclusive photos, which I would like to share with you. I am curious if you think I made the right decision.... The first one is attached to this reply.

The reason I chose this one has definitely to do with the diagonals; IMO, there are two. One in the pane of focus, following the mountain structure from lower left to upper right, and one perpendicular to the pane of focus, but created by the lensbaby, inserting the feel of motion from lower right to upper left.

Thanks a lot for your feedback! Very much appreciated!

Cheers,

hugo

Option one: Connection with the first image

Hi Hugo,

I thank you again for your pleasant comment on my last, it was very interesting to know your points of view and observations. Now let me say something about your photo. I miss a bit a human presence, but this is absolutely a personal point of view because rarely I can take a shot without people, instead I like the Lensbaby effect in this shot, maybe because it less strong than the previous ones, it’s almost in the diagonal and this takes my eyes along the rock valley, I seem to be a bird flying over the mountains and I love this sensation :)

Best regards
Max

Hi Verena, as usual my sincere thanks. I like your phrasing, very descriptive, and great to get a glimpse at how you see this (or any other image, for that matter) photo.... Thanks!

Hi Joel,

Thanks for the feedback. Again, this image is basically straight out of the camera, no burning applied. Intersting point, again, it's something I hadn't noticed before. Thanks,

Cheers,

Hi Gerhard, thanks for the feedback. This has been a very useful experience, posting something entirely new and extreme (for me), using a new lens and all.... Great to read all those different reactions!

Interesting, too, as I initially thought this one was the weakest of the three, couldn't have been more wrong, I guess...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Manu, good to hear from you again. Of course this technique can be used with different subjects. You can even get a macro converter for this lens...:) Don't have that one, but if it's as versatile as this lens, I'm sure it's great fun too!

Cheers,

Hugo

Like a 3d image, you have managed to create such a huge amount of movement from a "still"....very well done, Hugo. Could this tecnique be used with a different subject matter?

Although this doesn't have a person as the focus point I think it does fit into the triptych very well. This one works the best for me, feels a bit like being on skis heading out of control towards that pile of rocks!

I agree with Tim that it generates a weird feeling. The image really gives the sensation of falling towards the rock. Very effective, but it leaves a knot in one's stomack.. As such I think it's more effective than the previous two lensbaby photos which were basicly just somewhat weird..

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 3/20/2006
Hi Tim, thanks for the feedback. I'm especially pleased with your remark that you're not sure it's a pleasant feeling... If you look back (and read a bit in the comments), you'll see that I didn't intend these photos to create a pleasant feel. As this one is definitely different from the other two, I wasn't fully convinced it would fit within this triptych....

Cheers,

Hugo

Yikes..... this one sure challenges my vision. And yet, holds my attention. The blurred effect in the foreground drives my eyes into the distant aspect of your image very forcefully. I am not sure that it is a pleasant feeling. But very effective never the less.

Hugo,

So cool! This look is so captivating. Very well done. Great composition. The colors are insane!

hard to tell if that's a controled burn area, or green on the lower left, but whatever it is, anchors the image so well, and contrasts that rust on the upper right perfectly!

very nice!

cheers,
-joel
