About Soldiers from 3rd Squad, 1st Platoon, 9th Engineer Battalion, 2nd BCT, 1st Infantry Division move tactically from house to house during combat operation in Samarra on the 1st of October 2004.

Okay a little bit about this photo - I was placed in the middle of a six man fire team as we went from house to house in Samarra. These guys where in the rear of the six man fire team - And no this was not a set up shot - I just got lucky - Right place, right time. If I would have set this shot up - Then I would have had the other Soldier on the far right wear sun glass (saftey googles) so as to balance out the photo and I would have used a flash as well.

Congratulations Chuck for the Newsweek cover, excellent framing and lighting, and you had to be quick, these are not planned shots where people pose for you. Great work! Ina

Gene,

Well here is a copy of the Newsweek front cover, it took me awhile - but I had some time on my hands - so I scan it. I think it was cool how they droped the banner behind the Soldiers.

Mike,

Thank-you for the kind words. Yes, all my gear is goverment issue. By the way most all of the military Combat Camera Unit use Nikon gear. Back in the day we use to use Canon (F-1s and AE-1s). I was told the reason we went to Nikon was becuase of the lens - Nikon doesn't change their lens mount - like Canon did. So it hard was hard for us to do up-grades on our gear.

Awesome photo! It should be considered for a Pulitzer Prize. It’s no surprise it made it to the cover of Newsweek. I can’t critique this other than saying it’s excellent. I love the feel of this photo, the hard light from above and outside the house, it’s sort of surreal. I also like the feel of the devastation in the ruble, it looks like the united states military rolled thru there.. oh wait.. we did. I’m wondering what it might have looked like before the fighting broke out. Is that your d1x or Government Issue? If it’s gov. issue, do they decide on a Nikon or did you? I especially liked the comment left here by Omar, it’s sort of sarcastic, but comments like that only reinforce my pride in being American. God bless and take care!

What a great shot,Chuck, especially since it was off the cuff! You know what they say about luck: it's where preparation and opportunity meet, and you've certainly shown that! Congrats for getting this one published, it must suck that the civilian photogs get a lot of the credit, when guys like you are out there doing the same thing.
BTW, thanks for giving me the CAF site, there are some great images there, and it's full of info on our armed forces that should get a lot more publicity.
Dave.

I have a pair of sunnies similar that I wear for shooting (I'm a sporting shooter) my favorite hobby I'd be lost without them and they are yellow tint I can also wear at night for protection, I think it is good that people understand these things so then there can be positive comments, my best to you Tracey..

Tracey,

As always -- Thank-you for your postive comments. FYI - If you get the yellow tinted lens for your Wiley-Xs you can wear them both day and night. The yellow tint cuts down on the glare from car lights and other lights at night while driving.

Best Wishes,

Chuck

Gene,

Thanks! I wish I could send out my images to newspapers, but I can't. I'm a U.S. Army Combat Cameraman and all my work is sent to the Joint Combat Camera Center (JCCC), Pentagon. However once my imagery is cleared and released by the Public Affairs and a few other folks, then it can be picked up by Civilian media and other outlets. Also any images that I shot (while on duty) and place in this site, I still have to get permission from the PAO and a few other folks. On a different note - I was very lucky in the fact that this image did get picked up by the media -- it made the cover of Newsweek (8 Nov 2004). I was really stoke about that - my Mom and friends all picked me up a few issues.

wonderful action shot well caught, now I have to say something about the glasses as so many people have I have a pair and they are exactly what you say (safety glasses)they not only protect your eyes from foriegn bodies but also the sun and can see through these with no problem and besides they look really cool my son in (Army) gave a pair to my husband I didn't realise until last night, great light on this shot as well, keep up the good work Tracey

It is very strange to see people inside their home with those dark sun glasses.
Also curious about that black instrument of top of their hats. What are they?
Also I wondered what has happened to the doors of the houses??

Well captured & dangerous work, I'm sure these soldiers are on edge during a mission & it's possible @ times for a camera to be mistaken for a weapon thus getting shot @ as a result. Anyway excellent journalism & like how the wall frames those brave soldiers, well done Johancharles, stay safe.
