Thanks so much, Julie. I haven't looked at these pics for a really long time (where does the time go?) and your generous comment brought me right back, to them and to usefilm. I quickly checked out a few of your images... Shining thru especially caught my eye, a vibrant, distinctive view of a steel and concrete standard. Beautiful light and reflection, color and composition. Very nice!

Thanks, Joggie. I'm glad you like this one. Incidentally, I spent the day before yesterday with a winemaker from Paarl, and I can't wait to visit your country. It sounds magnificent!

Thanks, Humberto. The blackground is simple. I put the flower on the seat of a chair, then draped the black cloth over the chair back. Using slight PS contrast adjustment and burning for consistent blacking finished it. So often the best results come from the simplest efforts! Good luck!

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique Hi Tim. I've read your answer to Bill Morgenstern. The procedure you used for creating the two orchids, that you describe, is just the way I love most and try to put into practice. But the results are too, too, too much different from yours! Similar pictures remain my hoped, impossible aim. Even if I see that people prefer bright, vivid coloured flower pics.
While I admire your pictures I take heart!
Cheers.

Giuseppe

What a perfect shot. Composition, colors and most of all the lighting effect.

Could you explain how you did the lighting on this fantastic photo.

Amazing texture and delicacy. You have captured the essential beauty of this Orchid, a worthy challenge, considering the legendary fragile beauty of these flowers. Congrats!

Thanks for the Flora, great work with the lighting. Once again it proves there is a difference between looking and seeing.

Thanks so much, Kathy. Actually this was not cut out, just careful lighting against a flat black ground and post-processing to insure the contrast. I'm glad you like the result!

Thanks so much for your comment, Joel. I suspect that you are a macrofloral guy, too! I shot this against flat black then used ps contrast and burning to insure full black. I'm glad that you like it. I'll check out your portfolio, too.

Congrats on POD Tim! This is just gorgeous! I didn't go back to see what your technique was for "Orchid" but I'm assuming that you cut this out...and if you did you did a great job of it! Also, the lighting is just beautiful! Well done, and well deserved award!

Stunning contrast Tim!

This is beautiful! The balance of texture, light, and color is so wonderful! Curious if you extracted this, or shot it against black. The trimming of the stem was a brilliant idea to give the composition perfect balance.

Well done my friend! Congrats on a well deserved POD!

cheers,
-Joel

congratulation on the POD award, I like how you made it appear floating and especially the direction of the light. I agree the leaves themselves have their own beauty that compliments the flower. Congrats!

Tim Long Tim Long   {K:9228} 2/4/2006
Thanks, Bill!
This is one of the many orchids that my wife grows so well. The technique was actually fairly simple; flat black ground, long tripod exposure for full DOF using natural soft late-afternoon light from a window on the left (above the image as I have presented it here), ps to bump the contrast and pop the bloom and with selective burning ensure the black behind, cloning to remove distractions, sharpening to finish. I especially liked the contribution of the leaves on this image. I've seen, and taken, so many blossom-only orchid shots (like my "Orchid") and I think the leaves really add to the composition here. Thanks again for your kind attention, Bill. I've been surprised how little interest these two shots have attracted. The new Usefilm?

WOW - Tim, this is amazing and absolutely gorgeous. I had no idea you were into orchids. Is this cattleya one you grew or one from a show? I raise these but have never had an orchid shot I have taken turn out in such a stunning way. How'd you do this? Lighting and comp are truly superb and the color is amazing. Congrats on POD and I hope we see more!

Best regards my friend - Bill

Thanks, Warren. I have checked out your personal site and am wowed by your use of light and distortion to create unique images. Your Kitchen Counter Silhouette, for example, is utterly brilliant. I suspect that your technique is similar to mine for some of my early floral postings on usefilm. That bending of light was responsible for rekindling my fascination with light-painting.

When I went to the home page early this am it was there, and as you can see when you open this shot it is with the picture and also shows up under the photo on your public profile. Hard to believe that no one else has commented on this. Will look forward to seeing the unworked Orchid. I bet these two are breathtaking together. Jan

Thanks so much, Jan. When did you see this as POD? I didn't know (also, you are not only the first to comment, but the only!?). I am glad that you like these images, and I will post an unworked Orchid for you as soon as I have a chance. Thanks again for your attention and interest.

Congratulations on POD. This is beautiful, and the composition is just right - colors and details are wonderful - the lighting is fantastic - and I would love to have this one and Orchid as photos for my wall. Would really enjoy seeing Orchid in the original. Glad to see that I am the first to comment on this. Really, really do like! Keep them coming. Jan
