I just moved here Larry and I'm not a spectator sports fan. I know nothing about football or any other sport for that matter. Occasionally I'll hear a name and ask my husband what the name means and then he tells me but also you have to remember that not only I'm a visitor to Oregon but also I'm from Australia (been in the states some 6 and a half years) I know I should know but I'm still learning about some American cultural activities. Having said all that, however, I don't drink beer or watch spectator sports in Australia either and that's more or less an Australian staple. I know - I'm a disgrace to my race. (hehe) Another funny tidbit...I'm also of greek heritage and I don't like olives. (yuk) So I guess I'm a failure all around when it comes to cultural idiosyncrasies. (haha)

Thanks for dropping by Steve. I believe they are trimmed this way similar to the bonsai. Funny thing though. I live across the road from a very large nursery spanning for miles and I've never seen anyone trim these trees. They don't seem to grow out of their rounded pom pom shape so I don't really know if they naturally grow this way or if they are in fact trimmed to this shape. They have certainly generated interest in here though so I'm glad I posted it even if it was a just for fun shot.

Thanks for dropping by. Strangely enough these trees really are called Pom Pom trees. They are trimmed this way deliberately for aesthetic effect much like a bonsai except much much larger. I appreciate your visit.

Those are some weird looking trees. If you find out what kind they are let me know. I've never seen anything like them. It looks like you may have taken this when there was an overcast sky. The even lighting really helps bring out the repetition in shape as there are minimal to no shadows. Very fun image.

Hi Ann, Yeah, the green vs. the warm red works beautifully. Also the seemingly cluttered coherence (never mind the paradox) of repetitive shapes is very appealing. It's busy allright, and dosn't quite have a clearly distinguishable primary subject, but that's not the key issue here. It's pleasant to look at, and has a strong appeal (othewise I don't think I would've opened it) Interesting shot, and well snapped!

Ann, I did manage to find these trees through Google. The nursery name is Pom Pom trees. It is not a kind of tree however but process of trimming or training various kinds of trees. It is related to Bonsai. If you will check

Del, I have seen these trees in other nurseries and as far as I know they are used for landscaping purposes. Somebody once told me they thought they were called P{om Pom Trees but I don't know if that is their real name. I believe they are a part of the evergreen family of trees as they have what appear to be pine needles or similar. Perhaps if you Google Evergreens and go through some photos yoou might find a botanical name. If you do please drop ny and let me know.

Ann, this is really good. I love those colors. Besides being just beautiful and very well captured it makes me wonder several things. I wonder what the trees are used for. Are they just for sale as yard decoration? Are they farmed wide spread or is this the only field you have seen? If you have a name for them I would like to look them up on the internet. You shot sth out of the common, considering what you photograph normally, but I have to tell you:

The colours are great and the composition is that excellent, turning it almost into an abstract.

Did you nickname them Pom Poms after all we Pom Poms living in the UK:):):) It is a good fun shot sweetie and maybe that ribbon went there because a yellow one and an old oak tree weren't handy. WOW thanks Janet! Your words too kind. I'm quite "puzzled" by so many people actually liking this image as it was another of my "just for fun" shots. As to what sort of tree it is I have no idea but somebody told me they "thought" it was called a Pom Pom tree and I kinda thought that suited it so I like to call it that. :)

Puzzle comes to mind....it would make a great puzzle! Really could see this on a box of 1,000 pieces and what a challenge it would be :)

Hi Ann! Terrific image! I love the pom-pom / cheerleader idea, this is a Cheerleader Nursery! The trees seem alive, holding hands and... cheering! Very happy image, happy colors and great DOF. A Dr Zeuss inspiration! I see Brown Bar Ba Loots frisking about under the Truffula Trees. Oh sure, the leaves weren't so green and sure, the trunks were striped BUT that's them alright :))
I love this Ann and so does my son! It really is a fun image and off it goes into my favs...
