Absolutely no question about the composition of this as opposed to the other post Don. This one is good...the next is outstanding! Isn't helpful criticism just the best??? Kathy

Oh heavens Don it's not a bad composition. It's just that your standards are usually set much higher and it's very rare that I can ever give you any sort of "constructive" criticism because you always pay attention to such details. I am actually quite humbled and a bit nervous to be critical to a photographer of your calibre. Thank you for taking my comment with the good intent in which it was written.
Cheers - Ann :)

Hi Ann, I know the composition is bad but sometimes you just let things go and it should have been made better. I just might get with the progam and see what I can do about making it better. Thanks for your most helpful comments, they are much appreciated. Don.

Hi Lily, the strobes that I am using for this are very old studio strobes with the power pack at the base. One has a soft box on it and the other has barn doors that I can control the light. They are something that could not be replaced very cheaply. It is hard to tell someone what to buy in the strobe line. It about boils down to what you can afford. I would expect something that you can us an umbrella on. You can control umbrella light by the kind of umbrella you use. A reflective umbrella would give a much harsher light where a soft white translucent umbrella will give the softer light. I don't think I have answered your question but don't know your uses etc to make a judgement. email me anytime . Sincerely, Don.

An exquisite capture of these beautiful rose buds. The textures are almost velvet like. I feel the placement of the buds themselves is a little high and I will explain my reasons for saying this. In my "simplisitic" opinion if I see a subject reaching up such as these roses appear to be doing I like to give them more space at the top to "reach" into. The clarity and detail in the buds and leaves is wonderful right down to the delicate veins. I very much enjoy the fine spike type leaves on the left seemingly pointing to the rose buds so they are an excellent element. A beautiful capture Don.
Thank you also for taking the time to drop by my penguin image. I appreciate your comments.
Cheers - Ann :)

Hi Don, a very well lit image, and some excellent textures and details. Technically, I'd say it's spot on. As to the composition, however, I feel the center of attention (the rose buds) is too much located in the top half of the image, making the green leafs a bit too subsidary to the image. It opens up the composition, allowing the viewers eye to wander off a bit. IMO, it creates a disbalance in the image, which is not necessary, and reduces the effect and impact of this photo. Hope you see what I mean, just trying to phrase my thoughs...
Cheers,
Hugo

Gorgeous image. Sharp as a tack with perfect DOF. The lighting is excellent.
How powerful are these strobes Don? I've been thinking of buying a few but don't quite know what to get.

Excellent lighting, Don! You've really brought out the fine detail and magnificent colour of these roses. A very nicely presented shot, as well. ...and how do you like the "new" look of the site? Dave.
