Hi Ann, thanks for your elaborate and detailed comment, very useful. This one is my favourite too, because I think the composition is rather complex, yet well balanced. It assists the viewer in focussing on the main theme: the Subway Vents. I shot these during my first (and so far only) trip to NYC, and it's such a unique and photogenic city, it really screams out to be captured in medium (or large) format in Black and White.
I personally prefer street scenes to be in B&W too, but only if it fits with the subject; a carnival parade can be awesome in colour, making the bright hues the primary subject. In the case of NYC, I think B&W is the only option, though. Especially in winter, when the colours are relatively flat and grey anyway.
thanks again,
Cheers,
hugo

Hello Hugo, I've never been to NYC so I haven't seen this. Of the 3 images you have posted I like this one the best as to me it seems to have more elements of interest giving me more of an insight into what NYC is like. Firstly I personally prefer street scenes to be in B&W a they are are usually busy and by keeping them monochromatic it takes away the distraction of colour so unclutters the scene.
In this case I like the subtle reflection of buildings in the foreground leading me to the first vent. The verticle vent releasing more rising steam is an added interest in shape and the steam leads the eye further up the seemlingly narrowing street into the back of the image.
I feel as if I've had a small taste of visiting NYC with the viewing of this image. Just like a scene out of a movie.
Cheers - Ann :)

An interesting place, with so many good details...love the reflections and the skittle is smiling at me...because I wonder why the vent is allowed to come out here (stupid thought ...do they not have a 'Green Party'? ) :) A belated Happy New Year To you and your family! Ursula

Hi Hugo,
What I like so much about this image is the perspective - the pronounced elements in the foreground, in combination with the reflection of the buildings in the puddle, make that I get 'drawn into' the image, it makes me feel being part of the scene.

A marvelous image, Hugo...it brought back wonderful memories of NY. Last time I was there was during the "Beast from the East" blizzard -- first time in a total white out. Amazing! Can't wait to go back.
And I love this series...my SO (who grew up in Brooklyn) tells me that during the summer, due to heat, steam, accumulated gases and whatever, the manhole covers sometimes pop off and fly across the street. New York. Ya' gotta love it.

Hi Christian, Thanks for your feedback. Eventhough I believe there's a coherence between the many objects, I also had some doubts about it being too much. About the aperture, there is a typo, but I used an f/2.8, according to the EXIF. I shot this in February, and and the light was rather subdued by the skyscrapers surrounding me. I'll correct it. Good to hear from you again! Your feedback is always highly appreciated and very helpful!
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Thilo, thanks for your feedback. As to the square format, I shot quite a few images using MF B&W negative, and I think the B&W square format fits very well with the atmosphere of the City. Another reason is that the full frame version (per attached) has a rather blown out sky which I found rather distracting. I did shoot this to be cropped square, though. Thanks again, I appreciate your feedback a lot!
Cheers,
Hugo

Very nice street shot in its own style : B&W, square format. Lot of the "being there" feeling. Like many said, it couldn't be anywhere else but NYC. There is a lot of things going on in there, maybe exceedingly, I'm not sure. It was a good choice to boost the ISO to 400 and use an f16 (6 = typo of yours?). I think what serves the image best is the reflection in the foreground. The sky is at its best in there. It seems this is the point from where an escape is possible. From an emotional point of view, the image is perfect - great feeling, a touch of onirism (the reflected sky).

Perfect atmosphere of NYC, the smoke that goes out of the gutters is a classical of all the American movies ! I very also like the cut of the image and the tones of the B&W.
I didn't know your portfolio, but I see that I have lost a lot, in fact it is splendid.

Hi Marco, thanks for your comments. I've taken alot of B&W images with a medium format camera, as I think it fits the feel and atmosphere of NYC like a glove. In the book I've created with those images, I've also used a few digital ones, cropped square and converted to B&W, to match the MF 6x6 format. So the resemblance you see is not unintentional...:)
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Hugo,
for me, this is the typical street scene in New York. The smoking chimneys, the cabs, the people... all togehter presented in perfect BW with lots of bold contrasts... love the details like the reflection in the water. I'm not sure about the format though... the vertical dynamic with the moving cab and the smoke is something that works against the square IMHO.
nice one anyway ;-)
best wishes, Thilo

A signiture Hugo shot. Many times looking at one of your city shots is like reading, a glance doesn't do it. I don't like to just point out all the things that anyone can already see for themselves, but the many elements here almost seem as if they were carefully arranged for the shot and each adds significantly to the whole - the puff of steam from the manhole cover, the pedestrian on the left, the no-parking sign at top, the sillhouetted street lamp and black open end of truck to the right side, and the two sculptured shapes that dirrect your eyes to the water/reflection - each small item an important addition to the composition.

Good shot, blah, blah, read above... Sense of place, NYC, blah, blah, read above... Composition great, blah, blah, read above...
But more importantly... Nice update to your personal profile shot. You're young! I'd think you'd have to be an old guy to have 134K karma...
Excellent in B+W, wide tonality, compostional strength in the crop. 17mm wide adds a nice recession, interesting details. Seems to be a great shot that just "happened", kind of like a set up but chose the best from a series of shots kinda feel...
Simplicity in this shot is deceptive, looking at the details reveals the talent I think.
The person on the left is just so, the cab is just so, the steam is just so, etc. etc. blah, blah...
Did you put the two traffic cones up against the block, or just lucky?

Hi Hugo, I like a lot this kind of shot, they are like movie scenes, full of things and details, the smoke is very important to describe the scene, I agree with you for the choice of BW, only one little thing, I would have preferred with less cars, don’t know if it was possible though ;)
Of course I didn’t move to China, it’s just a joke between me and my Chemical Brothers (Ventrix Drogo, Giuliano Guarnieri, Efisio Mureddu and Marco Piantedosi) :))))
Best regards Max

Your compositions are always impeccable. Here you start out with a puddle reflecting the buildings which then leads your eye towards the block with the two cones beside it, over to the manhole with steam coming out, then on to the pipe, and lastly resting upon the no parking sign. And then with the angle of the street going towards the opposite direction-you have an almost perfect X pattern formed. There is certainly a lot to look at in this image, but it is no way cluttered-however I am sure in color it may have a different less desirable result. Nicely done Hugo~

This image is New York all over. Other than the theme it really has a lot going on, everywhere in the frame theres something happening. I particularly like the reflection on the right hand side. It has shape, form, texture and gives great balance to the overall image. The two black squares on either side of the frame offer their own form of symetry too. This is the kind of scene many phototgraphers would walk past and pay no attention to (even in this day and age when everybody has a digital camera!) but you nailed it. Great shot.

Could only be N.Y.with all that steam in the street!Fabulous B/W work with a great tonal range. The composition is most effective, those black foreground elements plus the black windows really help to hold the viewer in the scene. That wisp of steam in the middle of the street and the reflection in the puddle are great-feel like I've just visited the big apple!Great Work !
