About
When I shot this, I had in my mind a dark sombre image. I did not want this in color, it is quite gruesome. This particular deer was already dead when I found it - the vultures had discovered the carcass and were feasting on it. My idea was to get a photo of the clean-up crew, but of course they flew away when they saw me. So, I decided to take a different kind of shot.
What is implied here, happens altogether too often where I live. The deer are abundant and they seem to want to cross the road right before a car comes rather than after it has passed. I've not ever hit hit a deer with my vehicle, but did have an experience not long ago that shook me up. I was on my way to an appointment. Until I saw a red truck coming towards me, there had been no other traffic on the road. Suddenly a deer ran out in front of the truck; was hit, and was bounced into the lane directly in front of my car. I managed to stop and got out to see what I could do. The driver of the truck came running and yelled at me to not touch the deer. When he came closer he explained that when they are wounded they can seriously harm you if they attempt to kick. He must have had some experience with this because he unceremoniously grabbed the animal by a back leg and pulled it off the road and into the grass. Then he drove off. The deer was still alive and I have to admit that I'm soft-hearted and was pretty shook up. Since I live in Texas, where truck drivers drive around with rifles mounted inside the cabin, I proceeded to flag down one truck after the other asking if they had a rifle to put down the animal with. I had no luck, and had to eventually drive off and leave the deer so it could go to greener pastures.
